A native of Sicily Island, La, and resident of New Iberia, Windell Ray Jackson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 8:34 PM at his residence, with his loving family by his side.
He retired as a senior agronomist with the American Sugar Cane League (ASCL), after 41 years of service. He received his Bachelor of Science in agronomy from Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana of Monroe). He began writing his “On the Farm” sugarcane column in 2001 with his last column published on May 1, 2014. In 2001, he also became ASCL’s research coordinator. Over the years, he authored and co-authored numerous research reports.
He assumed many important roles in the sugarcane industry to which he was a dedicated and respected leader, but his biggest joy was his family. Windell was a loyal and devoted husband to Judy for 50 years. He was a proud and loving father, and grandfather. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time fishing with his grandchildren and watching them enjoy life. He was a patient and caring friend to many, and made time to listen or lend a hand whenever it was needed. He was a rock of stability and a calming voice of reason when things got hectic. He may have been a man of few words, but his actions demonstrated his deep love and care to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Judith Jackson of New Iberia; his daughter Wendy Jackson Ortego (Brian) of Breaux Bridge; his four grandchildren, Caitlin, Gabrielle, Chandler, and Jackson; sister-in-law, Janet Wood Bernhardt (Carl); nieces, Katie Bernhardt (R.J.), Kathe Price (Jimmy); nephews, Steve Jackson (Barbara), Ronald Swaggart (Lynn), Glen Swaggart (Clarissa), Ricky Swaggart; mother-in-law, Vera Wood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Enos and Lela Tarver Jackson; brother, Thomas “Sonny” Jackson (Patsy); sister, Louise Swaggart (Gilbert); father-in-law Charles Wood, his nephews, Joe Swaggart (Connie), Hoppy Swaggart.
The family would like to thank Acadian HomeCare and Acadian Hospice for the kindness and compassion they showed to Mr. Windell. Thanks also to, Dr. James Falterman Jr. and his staff for many decades of love and care. Thanks to Dr. Brierre and staff at the J.D. Moncus Cancer Center for their dedication to fighting cancer.
