Born April 23, 1935, Reving “Sonny, Big Rev, Pop” Broussard Jr., was born in New Iberia, La to Reving Broussard Sr. and Esther Lopez Broussard. A lifelong resident of New Iberia, Mr. Broussard graduated from New Iberia High School in 1954 where he served as the manager/trainer for the school’s Boxing Club. He also enlisted in the US National Guard. On June 12, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Jacqueline Penn Broussard. Married for 63 years (until her death), they raised their six children and countless other “honorary children” over the years.
Big Rev worked various jobs to provide for his growing family including the New Iberia Fire Department, Rev’s Cleaners, EP Breaux Electric, Texaco and Clean Craft. On July 1, 1973, he fulfilled his dream of owning his own business, JEM Products. At the time of his death, Big Rev was still an active salesman for the 46 year old business. He was also very active in community and civic endeavors serving as past-presidents of the Jaycees, New Iberia Chamber of Commerce and the Ancient Order of the Creole Gourmet. With a passion for music and as an avid dancer, Big Rev could be found “cutting a rug” at every opportunity. He enjoyed fishing, golf, hunting, horse racing, and Saints’ football. One of his favorite pastimes was the Cypremort Point fishing tournament. A masterful storyteller, Rev would entertain people at every opportunity and never knew a stranger. A pillar of the community, he was frequently seen at area establishments like Duffy’s Diner, Victor’s Cafeteria, and the Farmer’s Market reminiscing with lifelong friends and telling tall tales.
