New Iberia – Private funeral services will be conducted for Raymond J. “Sam” Bernard, Sr., 91, at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 18, 2019, in the David Funeral Home Chapel with Father Ed Degeyter officiating. Proclamation of the readings for the funeral service will be proclaimed by Valerie Griffin, Lori LeBlanc and Renee Terro. Interment will follow at Holy Family Mausoleum.
Public visitation will be on Sunday, March 17, 2019, from 5:00 PM until 8:30 PM with the recitation of the Rosary by the Men’s Rosary Group at 6:30 PM.
A native of Welsh and a resident of New Iberia, Sam passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019, at 12:30 AM at Landmark of Acadiana Nursing Facility.
He was employed with the U. S. Post Office for 30 + years and retired as the Assistant Post Master. He retired from the U. S. Army Reserve as a Major with 30 + years of service, prior to his retirement in the Reserves he also served in the Louisiana Army National Guard in New Iberia where he was the Unit Commander for numerous years. He was a Veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam Era.
He was a musician, playing drums, with several local bands and had a love for Big Band Music. He also enjoyed Horse Racing, Off Trac k Betting and training horses. He volunteered with the Evangeline Little League Baseball where he coached and umpired.
He is survived by his wife, Una Derouen Bernard of New Iberia; his daughter, Susan B. Dore and her husband Mark of New Iberia; his sons, Alan “Pat” Bernard and his wife Angela of New Orleans, Raymond J. Bernard, Jr. and his wife Susan of New Iberia and Rudy James Bernard and his wife Crystal of Warsaw, Missouri; his step-daughters, Kay Marie Leleux Lancon and her husband Dale of Lafayette and Virginia “Jenny” Leleux McGee of New Iberia; his step-son, Kenneth Michael Leleux and his wife Wendy of New Iberia; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way; eleven step-grandchildren and fifteen step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Laura Jane “Tut” Delcambre Bernard; his father, Sidney Bernard; his mother, Valerie Sanders Bernard Darby; his step-father, St. Mark “Pete” Darby, Jr. and his brother, Allen Bernard.
Pallbearers will be Ryan T. Dore, Braxton J. Bernard, Dustin V. Bernard, Brett J. Bernard, Justin J. Bernard, Frank P. Todaro, Thomas M. Dore, Landon P. Terro, and Nathan B. Bernard.
