Randy Paul Romero

Erath - A Memorial Mass for Randy Paul Romero of Erath, Louisiana will be held on Tuesday September 10, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Erath, La. Services will be officiated by Father Andre Metrejean.

Immediately following the Memorial Mass, in the Church Hall, a gathering of family, friends, fellow horse racing colleagues and fans will take part in a Memorial Tribute, “Remembering Randy – A Time to Share.” Memories of spectacular victories, unimaginable mishaps, Randy’s never-ending faith in God and his tremendous love for horse racing, known as the “Sport of Kings,” will be highlighted by longtime and personal friends in the racing industry.

On December 22, 1957 Randy Paul Romero was born unto Lloyd and Joyce Romero of Erath La. From that day forward, Randy was referred to as Son, Brother, Grandson, Classmate, Apprentice and Jockey. With a string of notable winning mounts in stakes races and futurities, his fans began addressing him as, Rajun Cajun, Winner, Champion, Hall of Famer and Living Legend. On August 29 th Randy gained a new name in Heaven, “Angel.”

When the Lord calls us home, we know that Randy will be waiting at Heaven’s gate to welcome his mother, Joyce Sonnier Romero, Brothers and Sister-in-Laws: Gerald and Mona Romero, Edward Romero, Kenneth and Sue Romero, John and Brandy Romero.  He had only one child, a son, named Randy P. Romero II; fiancé, Mekka Ella Duhon; three grandchildren, Mia, Mason, and Koah; nephews, Caughey, Henry, Patrick, and John-David Romero. Nieces are Lacey Romero Hobart, Krissi Romero, and Ami Romero Deal who is also his Godchild. Randy had one other Godchild, Ashley Ebanks.  Randy’s Godmother Erlene Sonnier, Aunt Sherry Romero LeBlanc, Uncles Blaize and Dave Sonnier.

Randy P. Romero was preceded in death by his Father, Lloyd J. Romero, Maternal Grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Clement Sonnier, Paternal Grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sonnier, Godfather Joseph Willis Sonnier, Uncle Stanley Sonnier, Aunts Elite Meyers, and Ozite Menard.

The Romero family would like to express their love, appreciation and gratitude to Randy’s care-takers, Brandy Q. Romero, Kent Viator, and brother, Edward Romero.  Their loving care and dedication in every aspect of Randy’s life allowed him to live in the comfort and security of his home surrounded by his loving family.

The Romero family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for Doctors, Nurses, Staff and Employees of Ochsner’s Hospital in New Orleans, Kenner and Baton Rouge; Fresenius Kidney Care and most recently Amedisys Hospice Care.  We will always be thankful for the extended years and quality of life each of you gave to Randy through your care and expertise.

In lieu of flowers, we respectfully ask that monetary donations to be made in the Memory of Randy P. Romero to the “Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund.”  PDJF is a non-profit organization created to provide financial assistance to approximately 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injures .
