Peggy Louise Ducote

August 23, 1947 — May 26, 2021

Lafayette – A gathering of family and friends in a Time of Remembrance for Ms. Peggy Louise Ducote, 73, will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at David Funeral Home Chapel.

A native of Bunkie and a resident of Lafayette, Ms. Ducote succumbed to cancer and passed away at 11:16PM on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.

Peggy was, first and foremost, a true “Giver” – generously giving of her time, energy, and knowledge.  It was her love language.   She wouldn’t just say, “I love you and I care about you” with words; she would demonstrate it by sacrificing something of herself to bless others.

Peggy graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a B.A. in Physical Education.  Upon graduation, she began her career and calling by teaching and coaching at an inner-city Junior High School in Houston.  After many years, she left the Houston Education System to work as a UPS driver.

Peggy returned to Lafayette in 1982 and went to work out of the Lafayette Branch as a FedEx driver until retiring in 2004.  She then returned to the classroom, first teaching at Comeaux High School and then a private Christian School.  Her next endeavor was to invest in a new Chevy flat-bed truck and became self-employed as the owner/operator of her own hot-shot services, “Grace Express”. Because of her diligence and dependable service, Grace Express was a great success, proven by the 500,000 miles on the odometer when she retired for good.

Throughout her adult life, one of her greatest pleasures was her time spent in the organization, Bible Study Fellowship .  She was introduced to their program while still living in Houston and became a committed student from her first lesson.  When she discovered that they had a well-established program in Lafayette, she signed up immediately.  It wasn’t long before she began teaching children’s BSF classes, and later became a Discussion Leader for adult classes.  Nothing was more fulfilling than to answer her life’s calling – teaching – and teaching the Word of God.

In addition to her many years of devotion to the BSF program, Peggy spent her annual vacation time each year as a volunteer teacher for Vacation Bible Schools .  As always, she drew upon her every talent and resource, going “all out” - designing, building, painting – creating vivid props and illustrations, making lessons impactful and memorable.  Peggy considered making meaningful contributions into the lives of children a true privilege.

Not limited to scholastics, she taught and coached many youth sports teams – tee-ball, softball, basketball, soccer, and tennis.  Peg was a sports enthusiast and a huge Saints fan.

As any true teacher, she was also a lifelong student.  She attended several classes at University of Louisiana just prior to the pandemic shutdowns.  Peggy was an avid reader and whatever knowledge she acquired, she  put to use.  Peggy was a children’s book illustrator, the author of a Book of Christian Devotions, and many other creative writings.

Ms. Ducote is survived by three brothers, Russell H. Ducote of Lafayette, Bert M. Ducote of New Iberia, and Dan Ducote and his wife Cheryl of Lafayette; three sisters, Diane D.
