Leona Marie Young

1929 — 2021

Leona “Lee” Marie Young passed with courage and grace on the evening of February 20, with members of her family at her side. Predeceased in 2010 by her loving husband of 53 years, Earl Joseph Young, Sr., her eight siblings—John Hebert, Elda H. Touchet, Aline H. Dubois, Albert (Bero) Hebert, Moise Hebert, Jeanne H. Higgins, Nolia H. Touchet, Andrew (T-Rouge) Hebert—as well as by her three children—Janice Marie Currie; Sheila Arceneaux Patterson; and Earl Joseph Young, Jr.—Leona is survived by her granddaughter, Katrina Ann Miller (whom she raised as her own child), 6 other grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was 91 years old.

Born in Milton, Louisiana, Leona resided shortly in both Texas and Virginia, before settling in Lafayette, where she lived in the same home for nearly 60 years. She devoted her life and energies to the diligent care of her home and the steadfast rearing of her children and grandchildren. Leona’s greatest love was her family, for whom she was a constant source of love and support.

Known for her feisty, yet good-hearted sense of humor, Leona loved spending time with family and friends; any chance to enjoy the company of her loved ones was special to her. An august and dignified woman, Leona was possessed of the uncanny capacity to find meaning and purpose in the most humble of tasks and activities. She spoke often and with great solemnity of growing up on a small farm in Milton, where she and her family were happy to make much of the little they had in terms of material possessions.

She will be remembered always as a loving mother and grandmother.

Visitation will begin on Friday, February 26 at 9 am, with a rosary to follow at 11 am. A Requiem Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church—100 E Milton Ave, Lafayette, LA—at 1 pm. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery will proceed thereafter.

She leaves us rich in memories.
