Larry Guy Hurst

Larry Guy Hurst peacefully passed away at his home on December 11, 2024, surrounded by his family.  He was born May 13, 1935, in Jonesboro, Louisiana; was salutatorian at Weston High School and studied architecture at ULL, formerly known as SLI.  He then married and became chef and owner of Poor Boy’s Riverside Inn Restaurant. Larry, along with his bride, operated as a second-generation husband and wife team, paving the way for placing Lafayette on the culinary dining map.  Even with this success, his proudest roles were being a loving husband, father, and Pa Pa.

Larry is survived by three of his four children, Kathlyn Elaine Alderman, Debra Louise Stewart Thrower and husband Danny, and Richard Nelson Hurst and wife Lori Watkins; six grandchildren, Micah Jay Pifer and wife Megan, Patricia Laura Estrada Courtois and husband Cye, Tonia Elyse Estrada and husband Josh Travis, Christian Davis Hurst, Geneva Jean Orr Barr and husband Solomon, and Stephen Thrower; eleven great-grandchildren, Jaiden Renee Hurst, Grey Thomas Courtois, Loren Elyse Courtois, Lawry David Barr, Brayden Kenneth Poche-Pifer, Isaac Matthew Pifer, Levi James Joseph Pifer, Rosalie Loren Travis, Elliott June Barr, Sophia Thrower, and Joshua Thrower; one sister, Frances Hurst Watkins of Falls Church, Virginia; two nieces, Larrie Ellen Watkins Randall and husband Pete, and Tina Lorraine Watkins Becker and husband Eddy; three grand-nephews, Michael Randall, Brian Randall and wife Lauren, and Robert Bostjanick; and two grand-nieces, Rachel Bostjanick Rogers and husband Ben, and Melanie Becker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anselm and Zama Hurst; his bride of 62 years Kathlyn Landry Hurst; one daughter, Patricia Laurie Hurst; one grandchild, Ashton Hurst; two sons-in-law, James Stewart and David Alderman; one brother-in-law William Ernest Watkins; and his long-time business partner and life-long friend, Jerry Riche.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Hurst, Christian Hurst, Micah Pifer, Danny Thrower, Cye Courtois, Josh Travis, Soloman Barr, David Faulkner, Kemp Coreil, Kevin Hale, Nolton Batiste, and Earl Harrison.

Donations in Larry’s name may be made to the Faith House, Post Office Box 93145, Lafayette, Louisiana 70509, or Southside Bible Chapel, 4256 West Congress Street, Lafayette, LA 70506.

Per Larry’s request, his ashes will be entombed at Lafayette Memorial Park. Services will be held Wednesday, December 18, at 12:00pm, with visitation starting at 10:00am at David’s Funeral Home, 316 Youngsville Highway, Lafayette.  Entombment following at 2111 West Pinhook Road, Lafayette, Louisiana.

The Hurst family would like to thank Dr. Eric Thomassee and the staff of Cardiology Specialists of Acadiana for treating our dad like their own.  Heart of Hospice for their compassion and guidance during this difficult time.  We would also like to make special mention of his long-time caregiver, Sue Page, who spent years caring for both Larry and Kathlyn.  We are grateful for the loving care our dad received from Lashonda Clay, Clara Alston and Jacqueline Comeaux.
