New Iberia– Funeral services will be conducted for Julius “Joe” P. Istre, Sr. age 85, on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at Calvary Pentecostal Church located at 12310 US-90, Jeanerette, LA with Rev. Joseph Adams officiating. Entombment will be on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. till the time of service at 6:00 p.m.
Julius "Joe" Istre, aged 85, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Garden View Assisted Living. Born on May 8, 1939, in Indian Bayou, Louisiana, to Willie and Nola Stutes Istre, Joe leaves behind a legacy of passion and devotion. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace in the tranquility of hunting and fishing, where he shared cherished moments with loved ones and friends. His hands were skilled, capable of mending anything that crossed his path, a testament to his ingenuity and resourcefulness.
Beyond his hobbies, Joe was a man deeply committed to his faith and community. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the service of God, sponsoring the establishment of new churches and nurturing the spiritual growth of those around him. Yet, amidst his religious endeavors, his greatest devotion was to his family. For 61 years, he walked hand in hand with his beloved wife, Shirley Dressel Istre, and together they nurtured a bond that withstood the test of time. Their union was blessed with five children, whom they raised with love, guidance, and unwavering support. Joe's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, cherished for his kindness, wisdom, and enduring love.
“Joe” is survived by his children; son, John Alleman (Cheryl), daughter, Selena Leger (Randy), son Eric Istre (Brenda), daughter, Shelia Smith (Bill), son, Julius “Joe” Istre, Jr.; siblings, Helen Pepper, Murphy Istre; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren.
“Joe” was preceded in death by wife of 61 years, Shirley Dressel Istre; parents, Willie, and Nola Stutes Istre; 1 daughter, Edna Marie Istre, and siblings, Ernest Istre, Widley Istre, Earlene Navarre, Horace Istre, and Clairan Istre.
Honored to serve as Pallbearers are David Istre, Johnathan Istre, Thomas Istre, Tyler Smith, Matthew Leger, and Darrell Fountain.
The family would like to thank the staff of Garden View, and Traditions Hospice for the kindness, care and support they shared with Mr. Julius “Joe” Istre, Sr. during this difficult time.
