Born in Grosse Isle, LA on September 27, 1930 in a house with no electricity or indoor plumbing, he was an avid reader always striving to learn something new. He lived to see many technological advancements and until the end, loved browsing Facebook on his iPhone.
He was the son of the late Josephine Weekly Renard and Theodore Renard. He died peacefully on October 23, 2022 at Calcutta House surrounded by his children and their spouses. Jimmie, having just celebrated his ninety-second birthday, was a man who wore many hats–army medic, boat captain, guitar player, carpenter, fisherman, mailman, and gardener. He grew and sold okra for many years, and he loved gardening. After he retired he expanded his garden to grow enough tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges, figs, pecans, and persimmons to give away to his friends and acquaintances. He loved his children and grandchildren, but was enchanted with his great granddaughters who he called the “cutest and smartest” girls.
Never one to give up, he exercised everyday and lived independently until the last six weeks of his life. Some of his family’s favorite memories were eating Spam sandwiches while trawling, fishing but catching no fish-it was really not about the fish, bringing pepper plants to his son-in-law, learning how to tie a tie, being pulled behind the tractor in the cart, picking pecans, sitting at the snack bar for supper, as well as, a lifetime of memories and wisdom.
He is survived by his son, Tommie Renard and his wife Ann, and his daughter Sonia Renard and her husband Alfredo Juárez; his grandchildren, Christopher Renard, Kevin Renard (Jennifer), Nicolás Juárez, and Gabriel Juárez; and his great grandchildren, Ruby Jean Renard and Mavis François Renard; a special nephew, Johnny Dubois; close family friends, Joyce Andrico and her daughters Jessica and Janae; his faithful companion Charlie, a Chihuahua, who always accompanied him for car rides; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette Simon Renard; his parents, Josephine and Theodore Renard; one brother, Noah Renard; three sisters, Velva Renard Murray, Mary Alice Renard Lirette, and Elva Renard LeBlanc.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tommie Renard, Alfredo Juárez, Johnny Dubois, Tony LeBlanc, Christopher Renard, Kevin Renard, and Nicolás Juárez.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Gabriel Juárez, Ruby Renard, and Mavis Renard.
David Funeral Home of Erath at 209 E. Putnam St. (337) 937-0405 will be handling the arrangements.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ronnie Lahasky for the many years of care he provided and a special thank you to Hospice of Acadiana and Calcutta House for the compassion and care they provided in Dad’s last days. This allowed him the opportunity to end his days in beauty and peace. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Acadiana or Animal Aid for Vermilion Area (AAVA).
