Ingrid Ilse Gaspard

July 6, 1947 — November 8, 2022

Erath- Memorial Services for Mrs. Ingrid Gaspard will be held at a later date.

Ingrid Isle Gaspard, 75, was a native of Schweinfurt, Germany and a resident of Erath, Louisiana. On Tuesday, November 8, 2022 our Lord Called her home. Ingrid was united in marriage to Alvin Joseph Gaspard for 54 years. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend who was affectionately known as “Oma” by many in her family.

Ingrid is survived by one sister, Helga Fischer of Australia; her daughter, Susan Marie Quebedeaux of Lafayette, La; her son, Dave Gaspard, and his wife Kathleen of Abbeville, La; her five grandchildren, Cordell Quebedeaux, Cameron Quebedeaux, Lauren Claire Trahan and her husband Logan, Taylor Renee Hebert, and her spouse Aaron, and Lexi Emma Gaspard; and her five great-grandchildren, Jayden, Kynlie, Brylen, Kaylee, and Luke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; her mother, Emma Lorbach; her father, Konstantin Chernenko; her son in law, Andrew, and her granddaughter, Jena.

Ingrid Came to South Louisiana from her native country of Germany at the ripe old age of 20 with her husband, Alvin. She had never been to Louisiana, was unfamiliar with the Cajun culture and her ability to speak and understand English was limited at best. She could only read and write in her native German language when she first arrived. Everything about South Louisiana was a learning experience for her.

With the help of her husband’s large family, including parents, 12 brothers and sisters, their spouses, friends, and other kind people who welcomed her to the area, she quickly learned how to read, write, and speak English. They also helped teach her how to cook. After a bit of a rough beginning, she not only learned how to cook Cajun food, but excelled at it and could prepare a dish that was unique to this area.

She also cooked a variety of German dishes that other members of her family still cook today.

In addition to cooking, Ingrid also possessed a deep love for animals, nature, reading, crocheting, and home plants.

Ingrid’s determination, inner strength, perseverance, mixed with a healthy touch of stubbornness are just a few of the traits that she lovingly possessed and utilized to adapt in a brand-new world.

It is a small part of her story that helps explain how at a young age, she left everyone and everything she loved in Germany and arrived in South Louisiana for the first time. With absolutely no knowledge of the area and only her husband, Alvin, by her side, she managed to adapt and thrive, making a home for herself and her family along the way.

Ingrid was loved by many and will be deeply missed, but forever lives in the hearts, minds, and memories of everyone that knew her.

David Funeral Home of Erath, 209 E. Putnam St. (337)937-0405 will be handling the arrangements.
