Herbert Morton Wood

June 29, 1932 — September 3, 2020

LAFAYETTE-Graveside Services for Herbert M. Wood, 88, will be private.

Herbert passed away Thursday, September 3, 2020 in his residence after a long battle with Dementia.

Herbert Morton Wood was known as many different names throughout his life. To the love of his life, Therese, he was a proud husband who would show up with Sonic Foot-long Chili Cheese Coneys just to let her know he was thinking about her. He stayed by her side as she battled cancer and never gave up on her as her life ended. We are certain that he and Therese are dancing together once again as he enters into her arms in life after this one.

“Herbie Baby“as his friends liked to call him, was always ready to have a great time. You could find him spending his weekends hunting with his buddies from Lost Lake Hunting Club, his summers with friends and family in Toledo Bend, his evenings visiting with his neighbors, and his mornings showering, swimming, and playing tennis at Red Lerille's Health & Racquet Club. He was a great friend, who never seeked the limelight, but always stood loyally next to those who loved him.

To his children, “Daddy” was always around making sure that his three children knew how much he cared for them by providing them with sound advice and random groceries (ie: white beans, Vienna sausages, and sardines.) He was always quick to step into the loving role of caretaker and protector when all of life’s hardships came. All too often, he would be sure to express that constructive criticism that we all will remember so well. He was a proud father who made sure that his children knew the value of education, hard work, good friends, great style, and the stock market.

Herbert Morton Wood was a proud Navy Veteran that kept his military pictures displayed on his refrigerator throughout his life so that he could remember “how good lookin’ he was.”

One of “Pop’s” greatest accomplishments were his grandchildren. He loved them so hard and taught them so many life skills: duct tape your shoes so that no one asks you for money, wash your truck in the rain as to not waste water, don’t ask questions if you don’t want to hear the answer, and how to make scrambled eggs in the microwave. His days with his grandchildren were spent at Shop-Rite getting icees, at grocery stores only buying what was on sale, swimming trips at Reds, and adoring his great grandchildren that he claimed, “never stop talking.”

To everyone who knew him as Mr. Herb, Herbie Baby, Woody, Daddy, or Pop, one thing is the same across the board. He was sure to make us all laugh, at each and every visit and would always be ready to hand you a beer while you stayed to chat. He was a sharped-dressed man, our sounding board, our safe haven, our patriarch, and everything to us. We will miss him tremendously, but we know he is dancing with angels now. May you forever rest happily knowing the impact that you had on us all. Until we see you again, “bye bye blackbird”.

As we celebrate the end of life for Herb, we want to send our sincerest gratitude out to his neighbors, who loved our superhero as if he were your own. Thank you for keeping an eye out for him throughout the later half of his life. We are eternally grateful to you all. We would also like to thank Lacey, Ron, Derek, and Tina with NSI Nursing Specialties for providing us with so much support and guidance throughout his life. Lastly, to his loving and caring sitters, Susie, Bionca, Kelly, Kitty, Kat, Kentessa, Kasey, Patsy, and Ladayshea, thank you for loving our sweet man. We are so grateful to each one of you.

He is survived by his son, Herbert “Shine” Wood and wife Lisa of Midland, TX, his daughters, Sherry “Honey” James and husband Ricky of Lafayette and Angela Boudreaux and husband Tibby of Carencro, brother, Don Kennon and wife Germaine of Lafayette, 12 grandchildren, Dustin Wood, Damen Wood, Danika Young, Derek Wood, D.J. Wood, Meagan Didier, Emily Eaton, Elizabeth James, Emily James, Colby Douet, Ashley Ridgedell and Madi Douet and 13 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Therese Laperouse Wood, his parents, Paul Atherton Kennon and Madge Justine Morton Kennon and a great granddaughter Karis Lynee Wood.
