How do you condense a life into a few short lines?  How do you help people see what a magnificent human being someone was?  How do you keep saying “was” instead of “is,” still continue breathing yourself?

Glen Davis Logan was born 31 August 1956 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas; only son and oldest child of D S Logan and Sondra Joy (Finch) Logan.  His father managed a series of farms in Texas and the family lived in the towns of Clint, Pleasanton, and Kennedy, Texas and, later, Franklinton, Louisiana.  Glen grew up working on the farm, driving tractors, baling hay, and – like every farm kid – helping with any and all of the chores required to keep the farm running smoothly. By the time he was 12 he had put together his first motorcycle.  His mother brought it home in pieces in a box saying if he could rebuild it, he could ride it.

At the age of 16, Glen moved out on his own and at 17 was invited to live with his Uncle JD Finch’s family in El Paso, Texas.  There he attended Socorro High School as a senior and graduated in June of 1975.  While at Socorro High, Glen met Debbi Sue Retherford and within 3 weeks of the start of school they were going steady.  Glen joined the choir at Grace Methodist Church in El Paso as well as the MYF youth group in order to spend more time with Debbi.  When she was cast in various musicals at the church and on Fort Bliss military installation, Glen joined the stage crews.

A year after their graduation, on 21 May 1976, Glen and Debbi were married at Grace Methodist Church in El Paso.  They bought half an acre and a mobile home in Clint, Texas and settled into married life.  On 2 Oct 1976, Glen and Debbi were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and in March, 1978, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa, Arizona Temple.

While living in the El Paso area, Glen worked for an ice distributor delivering ice with his Uncle JD; at National Restaurant Supply with his grandfather, Paul Finch; at the Truck Center working on semi-trucks, at Barton Brothers Auto Supply; and finally at Benoit Brothers Equipment.  After attending training, Glen was (at the age of 20) the only certified Bobcat mechanic in El Paso County, Texas; Dona Ana and Otero Couties, New Mexico; and the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.

When he turned 21, the opportunity arose for him to take a job in the oil field at Totco Tools in Hobbs, New Mexico.  On January 1st, 1979 Glen and Debbi took their first transfer and moved to Hobbs.  While living there, they welcomed their first child, Michelle Angelique Logan, who was born in Seminole, Texas on 3 Oct 1979.  He was offered, and took, a better job with Schlumberger Well Services in April of 1980, and in October, they were transferred to Roswell, New Mexico.  During their six year stay in Roswell, they welcomed their son, Jeremey Quentin Logan, born in Roswell on 27 Aug 1981, daughters, Amanda Jolene, born in Ruidoso, New Mexico, on 9 Dec 1983; and Melanie Jenelle Logan, born 16 Feb 1986, also in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

Glen took a three-year hiatus from the oil field and the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they lived for three years.  Schlumberger transferred Glen to Fort Meyers, Florida in September of 1989.  Glen loved Florida; however, after three years another transfer came:  this time to Paintsville, Kentucky in July 1992.  By 1994, Schlumberger transferred him to Byesville, Ohio where the family lived for four years.

In the spring of 1998, Glen was transferred to Louisiana where Schlumberger first had him teaching at their training school and then sent him offshore.  Debbi and three of the kids joined him after school let out in June.  In 2015, with over 30 years’ service, Glen retired from Schlumberger and went into business for himself as an independent consultant, incorporating as Logan Enterprises.  He was always in demand and was highly respected by his colleagues and peers.  He knew just about everything there was to know about the oil field and its operations.

Glen was universally loved and respected by all who knew him.  He served in many capacities in the church as a scout leader, home teacher, and member of Branch Presidencies.  He taught young men’s Sunday School classes and served as  a young men’s leader.  He offered his help and assistance freely to people he knew and strangers alike.  He loved working on cars, both our own, and to help others…but hated working on the house.  He enjoyed working in the yard and flying radio controlled airplanes and drones.  He took awesome pictures of birds and wildlife for Debbi with what we christened “Camera 9000.”

Most of all, Glen loved his children and grandchildren.  He was so proud of the man and women they became.  He bragged on his children every chance he got.  He called them frequently and was a big part of their lives.  When each of the nine grandchildren were born (6 girls and 3 boys), Glen was on hand for blessings, baptisms, school and sports events, birthday parties, and keeping kids while parents were out of town.  Family meant everything to Glen, and he looked forward to spending eternity with his family.

Glen was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Ruth (Warner) Finch and DS & Leola Belle (Bruton) Logan, his father DS Logan, Jr, and nephew Stephen Milton.  He is survived by his wife, Debbi (Retherford) Logan, daughter Michelle (Matt) Check, son Jeremy (Lauren) Logan, daughter Amanda (Ashu) Na’arayan, daughter Melanie (Zak) Livesay; grandchildren, Riliey Kiggans, Caitie, Lilah, and Logan Check, Cameron, Kelsey and Maverick Logan, Phoenix and Collin Livesay; mother, Sondra (Finch) Logan; sisters Tess (Tony) Hisaw and Dee (Doug) Cristina, nephews Justin Cutrer and Adam Milton and niece Aimee (Cutrer) Sills, along with 9 great nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law Jan (Grimes) Retherford, and brother-in-law Rick (Heidi) Retherford.

David Funeral Home of New Iberia at 1101 Trotter St. (337)369-6336 will be handling the arrangements.
