New Iberia – A Mass of Christian Burial for George Camille Simar, 97, will be held at 12:00PM on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Fr. Keith Landry officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Family Mausoleum.
Visitation will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 beginning at 9:00AM until the time of the services. With a recitation of the rosary at 10:30AM.
A resident of New Iberia, Mr. Simar died at 7:55AM on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at his residence. He was born February 28, 1928 on a rice farm in Acadia Parish that was owned by his parents. He started school at St. Francis Grammar School then went to Iota High School until the 9th grade when left school to help on the family farm during World War II and in 1945 at seventeen he enlisted in the US Navy. He served two enlistment from 1945 till 1953. He served in Europe and the Pacific Ocean on three ships, LST 127, LST 1152, and the destroyer USS Hamel AD-20. He was awarded the American Area Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Ribbon (Japan), Korean Service Metal (3 tours), and the United Nations Ribbon. He also took and passed his GED while in the Navy. While on leave from the Navy, George met the lady of his life, Yvonne. Roy.After a Honorable discharge from the navy George went to work for Halliburton Oilwell Cementing Co. in Eunice, LA as a truck driver. He later transferred to New Iberia to become the bulk plant operator, then a tool operator and finally a field supervisor before retiring in 1986. In 1960 Halliburton begin an education program for employees to advance their education. George completed a course in Petroleum Production Engineering Division 1. George was an active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church where he served as an usher and greeter for over thirty years and was a volunteer at St. Francis Diner. He and the love of his life, Yvonne, Traveled a lot. When it was too far to drive they flew, attending Navy reunions in San Diego, Portland, Maine, and Seattle. He was also a member of The American Legion, NRA, Tincan Sailors, and a life member of the VFW.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Yvonne Roy Simar of New Iberia; four sons, Dennis Brian Simar of St. Martinville, Mark Daniel Simar of Youngsville, Joseph Cleve Simar, Sr. and his wife Carolyn of Montgomery, TX, and Alan Jude Simar and his wife Laurie of St. Martinville; a brother, Clarence Simar; seven grandchildren, Joseph “Jay” Simar, Jr., Michael Paul Simar, Nicholas Paul Simar, Kaylie Simar, Bryan Simar, Camille Simar, and Kelly Simar; and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Felicia Cart Simar; a son, Steven Paul Simar; three brothers, John “Van” Simar, Linus Simar, and Louis Simar; and a grandchild, Jamie Simar.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Dennis Simar, Mark Simar, Joseph Simar, Sr., Alan Simar, Joseph “Jay” Simar, Jr., and Bryan Simar.
Frioux-David Funeral Home of New Iberia at 1101 Trotter St. (337)369-6336 will be handling the arrangements.
