Heaven opened its gates for another Angel, Elwood James Cormier, 73, who passed away at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette on January 15, 2022 at 3:10 a.m. from cancer.
Visitation will be at David’s Funeral Home on the Youngsville Hwy. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Burial will be at the Indian Bayou Methodist Cemetery in Indian Bayou, LA at 2:00 p.m. Please wear masks.
Elwood was born in Eunice, LA on January 23, 1948 to Leonard (Blue) Cormier and Lucy Thibodeaux. He grew up in Iota, LA and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1966 and was very proud of being a star quarterback for their football team. His family moved to Lafayette in 1967. He worked for Montgomery Ward from 1967 until 1981 when he went to work for Texax Gas until he retired in 1998. He married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Stutes, in 1968 and started their family.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters and their families: Shanna (Dave) Barras and their children Ashlyn, Justin, Rhiannon, Evan, Lillian and Aidyn; Angie Acosta and her children Kailan and Diego; and Stefanie Cormier. He is also survived by the love of his life, great grandson Liam (Jake) Trimble, as well as his sister Clara (Charley)Whipp and his brother Ralph (Rita) Cormier.
Elwood is preceded in death by his parents and his only son Jason Chance, who died after only two days. He was a great story teller and a real people person. He was a lover of nature, enjoying fishing, raising sheep, genealogy and was a local historian. He loved his family and many friends.
Pallbearers will be Justin Barras, Evan Barras, Diego Acosta, Brenden Gill, Ralph Cormier and Hayes Pousson.
David Funeral Home of Lafayette at 316 Youngsville Hwy (337)837-9887 will be handling the arrangement.
