Abbeville - To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; Eccl. 3:1
Dorothy Marie Davenport was born in Abbeville on June 29,1944, the oldest of three children to
Eldora Thibeaux and Morris Davenport, Sr. She was raised in the tight-knit community of Rabbit Hill where discipline, hard work and family love were paramount. She grew up attending Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, became a member of St. Mary Magdalen and later found community at St. Theresa Catholic Church.
She graduated from the Holy Rosary Institute in 1962 and attended Southern University for two years before returning home to marry.
After college, she worked many jobs in the community before serving as a treatment operator for the City of Abbeville Water Treatment Plant for over 30 years until retirement.
In retirement, Dorothy enjoyed country living and became an active member of the Come Lord Jesus Society and a Lady in the Knights of Saint Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, Court #77. She also served on the Board of the Vermilion Parish Council on Aging.
Dorothy was an active grandmother, a faithful caregiver, and an unapologetic devourer of sweet treats. She was a ferocious reader and enjoyed watching classic films, Perry Mason and The Young and the Restless on television. She also enjoyed going on Caribbean cruises with her friend Joyce Guidry; posting on social media and going out to Bingo.
Dorothy loved her family, and lived vicariously through her children. When her two daughters moved to New York City, Dorothy often traveled to visit them, where she enjoyed people watching, live music, fine dining, evenings at the theatre on Broadway and visits to the beach. Above all, she enjoyed attending Harlem’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church, often seeing and commenting on the late Cisely Tyson.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother, Eldora Thibeaux, her father, Morris Davenport, Sr., and sister, Faye Davenport. She is survived by her children, Monica Azare-Davenport (David), Dr. Janeen Azare, and Carlos Davenport. She leaves four grandchildren; Cole Davenport, Carlos Davenport Jr., Morgan Davenport and Regan Davenport. She is also survived by her brother, Morris Davenport, Jr. (Barbara); centenarian Aunt and Godmother, Sophie Thibeaux Hives; nephews, Carl Benion, Raymond Broussard, Jr. and Michael Davenport; Godchildren, Cathy Petry, Marilyn Henderson, Rodney Goodie and Gavin Willis; and a host of cousins and devoted friends.
