Abbeville - David Spinney passed away peacefully on November 8, 2023, surrounded by his daughter Terri (Spinney) Dempsey and son-in-law, Line Dempsey. Dave was a man of the sea, born on August 25, 1948 in the fishing village of Gloucester, Mass. Some say he could have been the model for the Fisherman’s Memorial overlooking Gloucester Harbor. After high school, Dave joined the US Army and served in the 1st Calvary Division in Vietnam.
After his military service, his wife and daughter, Terri, moved to Goldsboro, NC in 1983, living close to his brother Howard Pooler and his wife Haylim (So Moon). His brother, Howard, preceded him in death in 2022. His niece and nephew, Kimberlee and Howard, were very close to Dave, growing up close by in the neighborhood across the street. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Ackley, and his nieces Beth and Tricia in Robbinsville, NC.
Dave was a jack-of-all-trades, with the ability to fix almost anything. From working on the boat, to refinishing his daughter’s hard-wood floors, to building a table from a door – there was not much that Dave couldn’t do.
Dave re-married in 2016, to Theresa (Teri) Houghton and they moved to Abbeville, Louisiana. An avid bowler, he quickly found an alley and a league and spent many games with his bowling partner of over 6 years, Eadie.
Dave still made time for many projects around the house or with neighbors, along with the occasional road trip to visit family and friends. Just this summer, he made the long trek to NC to spend time with his daughter at the beach in Topsail.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
David Funeral Home of Abbeville, 2600 Charity Street, (337) 893-3777 are handling the arrangements.
