Betty Maria Lajaunie Magette

New Iberia–Private Funeral services will be conducted for Betty Maria LaJaunine Magette, 95, who passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 5:35AM at New Iberia Manor South. Betty was born on September 21, 1928, to Sidney and Irene Richard LaJaunie in Chacahoula, LA.  She grew up in New Iberia, LA with her three sisters and three brothers. Betty graduated from New Iberia High School in 1946 and went on to a full career with AT&T for 30 years where she met her second husband (Jim) along the way.  Jim was from Chattanooga and Betty loved the mountains, so they moved there in the early 1970’s where she stayed until 1990 (many years after Jim’s sudden passing in 1978). While there together, they raised their youngest son and traveled many times with their blended families to the Great Smoky Mountains and enjoyed the views and the mountain air-always one of Betty’s favorite things in life.

When she returned to New Iberia, she enjoyed the rest of her life with her children and still living sisters. She liked taking trips to Las Vegas, spending time at the casino and playing slot machines with her family.  In addition, she was an avid jigsaw puzzler, outstanding Scrabble player and card player, and later in life, would complete a writing composition class for which she was very proud.

Betty was always an advocate of eating right, staying healthy and remaining active as long as you can.  In many conversations, she would refer to these principles which clearly paid off over her long life.

She is survived by her children; Daphne Lopez of New Iberia, LA, Jake Cuccia of New Iberia, LA, Jason Magette (Amelia) of Clarksville, TN, Marcia Magette of Natchez, MS, Jimmy Magette (Peggy) of Birmingham, AL, and Diane Walmsley of Metairie, LA; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and her sister; Becky Segura and her husband Kenneth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Magette; her parents, Sidney and Irene Richard LaJaunie; her sisters; Brunella Gachassin and Geraldine Dautreuil; and her brothers; Joseph, Sidney Jr., and Jerry LaJaunie.

The family would like to thank Iberia Medical Center, Iberia Manor South and Hospice of Acadiana for all their kindness and support during this difficult time.

Inurnment to follow at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.
