Mrs. Barbara Saltzman Shedd, a beloved mother, grandmother, and devoted servant of God, passed away on December 28, 2024. Affectionately known as “Duckie” to her grandchildren, Barbara’s legacy is defined by her unwavering faith, dedication to her family, and her service to others. Barbara was a beacon of warmth and joy to all who knew her. She was the life of every gathering, with a personality that radiated love, kindness, and a contagious sense of humor. She cherished her role as “Duckie” and was a constant source of comfort and wisdom to her grandchildren, who held her dear. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. For many years, Barbara led a Bible study, nurturing others with her knowledge and deep love for the Lord. As a Secular Carmelite of the St. Joseph Guardian of Carmelite Community, she demonstrated her profound spiritual devotion. She was a Eucharistic Minister, providing the comforting presence of Christ to those in hospitals and nursing homes throughout Lafayette. Barbara’s dedication to service extended to her community and her country. As a military wife, she supported her husband through numerous relocations around the world, enduring the sacrifices that come with a life in the United States Air Force. She retired from the Lafayette Public Library as the Book Mobile Librarian after over 30 years, a testament to her lifelong love of learning and service to others. Her accomplishments were recognized in 2002 when she was honored with the Women of Excellence Award, a fitting tribute to her tireless work and impact on those around her. In addition to her deep commitment to family, faith, and service, Barbara was a passionate writer of short stories, an avid reader, and a lover of animals. She was a collector of antiques, finding beauty and history in the treasures of the past. Above all, she was a treasure to her family: a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who demonstrated the deepest love, care, and faithfulness.
