She was born July 14, 1916 in Rynella, La., the daughter of Emar and Emma Hebert David. Immediately after graduation from New Iberia High School her spirit of adventure led her to leave home to work at Gulf Public Service in New Orleans in 1934. IN 1937 she married Mayo (Jake) Young. During WWII Alma and Jake volunteered to serve in Trinidad, British West Indies. Their harrowing trip through the Gulf of Mexico, then patrolled by German U-Boats, remained an enduring memory. On returning to the U.S. in 1944 Alma and Jake lived first in Baton Rouge and then Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri before returning to New Iberia in 1957
Alma, who had been an excellent student, was always concerned about the education of her children, making sacrifices to further their schooling in every way possible. Through her support all five children attained professional degrees, something she was very proud of. Alma was a devout Catholic, actively participating in the life of St. Peters Parish. In recognition of her contributions in 2002 she received the Bishops Service Medal from the Diocese of Lafayette. She also received the Retired Senior Volunteer Program service award in 1993.
Alma is survived by five children, David T. Young and wife Cynthia E. Lyle of San Antonio, Texas, Richard A. Young and wife Millie of Brighton, Colorado, Mary Anne Suire and husband Phillip of New Iberia, Michael T. Young and former spouse Linda Wolfshohl of Covington, La. and Susan Young Sonnier of Lafayette. Survivors also include 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
