He was the Police Chief of Abbeville from 1974 until his retirement in 1978 due to a stroke that weakened his health. Mr. Nunez enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served with honor until 1946, seeing combat in the Pacific Theater of Japan and the Philippines. After serving his country with pride, he returned home and entered the oil patch, working for Mobil Oil.
In 1959, Mr. Nunez left the oil patch and started a career in public service that would last for 20 years. 1959 was the year that Mr. Nunez began his career with the Abbeville Police Department. He worked his way up through the ranks as patrolman, sergeant, and finally was elected Chief of Police in 1974. Chief Nunez served four years before he retired.
However, this did not stop his service to the Law Enforcement community. Mr. Nunez has been active in the Municipal Peace Officers Association since 1960. He has been a member of the Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police since the beginning, and has been an active, viable, important member, sharing experiences and advice to all of the rookie chiefs that have come along over the past twenty years. He was also active in the Southwest Louisiana Chiefs Association and was always around to share the sage wisdom of his experiences and years. He was honored at the 20th anniversary of the L.A.C.P. Conference for his lifelong membership and service to the association. He was also an avid Houston Astros fan.
He is survived by his wife of seven years Rena M. Guidry Benton of Texas City, TX; his step daughters Rose Evans of Orange, TX; Ramona Benton of Galveston, TX; and Genevieve Loveless of Kerrville, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
