Edward George Smith

Charenton-A private memorial gathering to celebrate the life of Edward George Ed Smith, Age 79, will be held at a later date. He died Saturday December 2, 2006 at 1:45PM at his home near Charenton. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward George Smith and Euphemie Roane Smith. Survivors include Virginia Lapeyrouse Smith, his wife of 56 years; one son, Edward George Ned Smith, III and his wife Rebecca Becky , of Franklin; one daughter Denise Smith Womack, and her husband Dan, of Lafayette; and grandsons James Anthony and Jonathon Edward Smith. Ed grew up in Jeanerette and was educated as a chemical engineer at Georgia Tech. He chose sugar cane farming as his lifelong profession, following in the footsteps of his Roane uncles and cousins. Later expanding into grain crops; soybeans, rice, wheat and corn. He was a member of the Sugar Cane Technologists League, past commissioner on the board of Franklin Foundation Hospital and past board member of Commercial Bank and Trust. In retirement, he enjoyed trading stocks and commodities, and most recently, fulfilling his dream of transforming a hundred-year-old hay barn into his residence. His true passion was loving and caring fro abandoned dogs-adopting many into a heaven of earth home. He is survived by BooZoo, Tinkerbell, Quito, Allie, Madonna (she sings) and Shorty; and was preceded in death by many other special and beloved dogs. If friends would like to remember Ed through charitable contributions, the family suggests an animal rescue organization of your choice or Hospice of Acadiana.
