Earl Schluntz

September 17, 1916 — March 4, 2007

Lafayette - Earl Kenneth Schluntz died peacefully Sunday, March 4, 2007 at his home in Youngsville, Louisiana. Mr. Schluntz was born in the farm house September 17, 1916 on what his dad called the old home place north of Belle Plaine, Iowa, to his mother Arianna Bohrer Schluntz and Father Carl H. Schluntz. When at age 4, his father bought a farm in Robins, Iowa and he spent his boyhood there. He was an undergrad at Coe College and mastered in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. The faculty awarded him membership in the National Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi. Mr. Earl Mastered at Penn State in Petroleum Engineering. At Penn State he met and married Rachel Amanda Gregg. He joined the staff of Shell Oil, Co. in Tulsa, Oklahoma on July 5, 1939. Thru his work with Shell he lived in Numerous locations " resulting in the birth of five children in five different locals. His last location was New Orleans, Louisiana in 1972, when he was retired and began working for U.S.G.S. where he taught Reservoir Engineering, and then continued on the Survey staff as a Petroleum Engineer. After four years with the Survey , a supervisor suggested that he teach again. Then he was told they needed a Petroleum Engineer at University of Southwest Louisiana. He taught at UL for five years starting in 1980. Mr. Earl was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church three times from 1964 to 1966 then 1980 to 1985. After retiring to Florida for a number of years, (he substituted at local schools) he returned to Lafayette in 1996. He cared for his wife at home until her death in 2002. Mr. Earl is survived by two sons; Gregg Allen Schluntz and his wife Nancy, James Kenneth Schluntz and his wife Sherry; three daughters, Susan Ann Schluntz, Sally Kay Schluntz and Jill Amy Guidry; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Earl was always involved in churches where ever he lived. He sang in the church choir and was instrumental in building projects at Asbury United Methodist in 1964 to 1966. He was a member of the Challengers Sunday School Class. Memorial Contributions may be made in Mr. Schluntzs name to the building fund at Asbury United Methodist Church, 101 Live Oak Boulevard, Lafayette, Louisiana 70503 Memorial Services will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church on Wednesday March 7, 2007 at 3:00 PM.
