New Iberia"Funeral services for Mr. Vernon Joseph Huckaby, 84, of New Iberia will be conducted on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 3:00 P.M. in First United Methodist Church of New Iberia. The Reverend Scott Bullock will officiate. Interment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2007 from 5:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M., and will continue on Sunday from 8:00 A.M. until service time in David Funeral Home.

Mr. Huckaby passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2007 at 3:15 P.M. in his New Iberia residence.

A native of Opelousas and longtime resident of New Iberia, Mr. Huckaby was a graduate of Opelousas High School. He attended SLI (later USL and ULL) for a year, where he played football on scholarship.

Mr. Huckaby was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. While attached to the Third Marine Division, he fought on the South Pacific islands of Bouganville, Guam, and Iwo Jima, and received the Purple Heart for wounds received while serving on Iwo Jima. After the war, Mr. Huckaby returned to Louisiana to marry his high school sweetheart, Beverly Victor, to whom he remained married for sixty-one years. He was discharged from the Marine Corps in November of 1945.

Mr. Huckaby moved to New Iberia, where he managed J.W. Lows Dime Store for several years before opening Victors Cafeteria in 1969. He was an avid golfer for much of his life. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. Huckaby belonged to Methodist Mens Club and had served as chairman of the churchs Official Board. He was also a lifetime member of The Marine Corps League and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Victor Huckaby of New Iberia; daughters, Virginia Huckaby Planchard and husband, Michael of New Iberia and Rebecca Huckaby Taylor and husband, Steve of Richmond, VA; son, Victor G. Huckaby and wife, Catherine of New Iberia; grandchildren, James Planchard and wife, Jamie of New Iberia, Lauren Huckaby of New Iberia, Vic Huckaby of New Iberia, Katelyn Huckaby of New Iberia, Quincy Taylor and wife, Toni of Kinston, NC, and Patrick Taylor and wife, Ondrea of Richmond, VA; great-grandchildren, Durin Planchard of New Iberia, Victoria Boyance of New Iberia, Hannah Taylor of Richmond, VA, and Sydney Taylor of Kinston, NC; and sisters, Wilma Miller of Opelousas and Dorothy Holloway and husband, Marshall of Opelousas.

Preceding Mr. Huckaby in death were his parents, Gomez and Lula Fisher Huckaby; grandson, Mickey Planchard; and brother, Leon Huckaby.

Serving as pallbearers are James Planchard, Vic Huckaby, Quincy Taylor, Patrick Taylor, Fred Dugale, and Allen Guillory.

David Funeral Home of New Iberia is in charge of arrangements.
