A native of New Orleans and resident of New Iberia, Dr. Heitkamp passed away at 3:47AM on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at a local hospital. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School, Loyola University, LSU Medical School and LSU Surgery Residency. He was a State Health Officer, a retired member of the Louisiana State Medical Society and Jefferson Parish Medical Society. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a great health care giver to his extended family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Walet Heitkamp of Iberia Parish; his daughter, Julie G. Heitkamp of Iberia Parish; his sisters, Lois S. Fraiche of Baton Rouge and Joycelyn H. Decareaux and husband, Cesir of Metairie; and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon August and Jeanne Treme Heitkamp.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Dr. John Fraiche, Dean Decareaux, Robert Fraiche, Merlin P. Walet, Jr., Rod McHugh and Alton Gondron, Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Carver, Leonard Lala, Dr. Stephen Herbert, James Marinello,Sr., John Porter and L.E. Dugas.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
