Mabel Schlesinger Schifer

July 4, 1907 — September 19, 2007

Abbeville- Mabel Schlesinger Schifer passed away on September 19, 2007 at the age of 100. She was born on July 4, 1907 on a farm north of Abbeville, to J. Albert Schlesinger and Emetilda Polombo Schlesinger. She attended school in Abbeville until her teen age years after which she was employed as a clerk in the circulation department of the Houston Chronicle. It was during this time that she met Eldred Schifer whom she married. Two years following his death in 1970, she decided to return to the place of her birth, Abbeville, where she has lived ever since. Mabel was a member of the Lay Carmelite Order. At the age of 97 she moved from her home into East Ridge Assisted Living, where she received great care and made many friends. She lived her final two years with much comfort and security thanks to the constant loving care of her sitter/companion, Helen Foreman, without whose help this time would have been very difficult. Aunt Mabel , as she was affectionately known by all who knew her, always gave generously of her love and time to any who needed her help. She will always be remembered for her outgoing personality and her love for all friends and family alike. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Fred and George of Abbeville, William of Alvin, TX and Anthony of Beaumont, TX; three sisters, Mary LeBlanc of Vinton, LA, Bertha Tilbury of Beaumont, TX and Regina of Abbeville. She is survived by four nieces, Barbara S. Broussard of Abbeville, Betty S. Noe of New Orleans, LA, Gladys L. Valentine of Vinton, LA and Anna Belle S. Watson of League City, TX; two nephews, Virgil LeBlanc of Sulphur, LA and Edward L. Schlesinger of Houston, TX. She is also survived by a host of great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 1:30PM at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Abbeville, LA. David Funeral Home of Abbeville will be handling the arrangements.
