Merrill Joseph Jacob

Jeanerette " Funeral services will be conducted for Merrill Joseph Jacob, 82, on Sunday, April 12, 2009 at 2:00 PM in the David Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bobby Hodnett officiating. Interment will follow in Beau Pre Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM and resume on Sunday, April 12, 2009 at 8:00 AM until services. Masonic Rites will be conducted by members of the Masonic Lodge 255 F&AM of Jeanerette on Saturday at 6:00 PM in the funeral home. A native and resident of Glencoe, Mr. Jacob died on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 12:00 PM at his residence. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army he began sugar cane farming after which he enrolled at SLI, now UL of Lafayette and earned his Masters Degree in Education. He began his teaching career at Bayou Vista Elementary, then went on to teach at Gibbs Elementary and then went on to teach at Glencoe Elementary until his retirement after 25 years with the St. Mary Parish School Board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 255 F&AM of Jeanerette for 54 years and a member of the Masonic Aurora Lodge 193 F&AM of New Iberia. His hobbies were raising chickens and donating the eggs. His greatest pleasure was taking his great grandchildren collecting the eggs and teaching his grandchildren and great grandchildren how to drive on the family farm. He is survived by his wife, Louise Derise Jacob of Glencoe; his daughters, Lynn Jacob Daigle and her husband Wayne of Glencoe, Pansy Jacob Thomas and her husband Elmer Butch and Gay Jacob Trahan and her husband John all of New Iberia; his son, Merrill Wade Jacob and his wife Aleta of Franklin; his grandchildren, Michael V. Thomas and his wife Jennifer, Julie T. Clifton and her husband Brad, Brock M. Thomas and his wife Brandy and Jason Trahan and his companion Laura all of New Iberia, Kasey J. Daigle and his wife Jennifer of Ponchatoula, Josuha J. Daigle and his wife Dottie of Detroit, TX, Abby Trahan Dupuis and her husband Chad of Dallas, TX and Brittany Lee Jacob and her companion Nick of Bloomington, IL; his great grandchildren, Alyssa N. Thomas, Sadie A. Thomas, Madison M. Thomas all of New Iberia, Kathryn Elaine Daigle of Ponchatoula and one expected great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Bessie Glaubrechet Jacob; his brother, Gordon Jacob and his sister, Carol Jacob. Pallbearers will be Michael and Brock Thomas, Kasey and Joshua Daigle, Jason Trahan and Merrill Wade Jacob. Honorary pallbearers will be Julie Clifton, Brittany Jacob and Abby Dupuis. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Shriners Hospital in Shreveport, LA. David Funeral Home of Jeanerette, 400 Provost St. (337) 276-5151 is in charge of arrangements.
