Erath - A mass of Christian Burial will be held on June 29, 2010 at 11:00 A.M., at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church honoring the life of Lawrence J. Broussard, 96, who passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at his home, doing what he loved most, working in his garden, harvesting his summer vegetables. Father Gayle Nunez will officiate the services. A celebration of Mr. Broussards life will take place at Davids Funeral Home in Erath beginning at 1:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. on Monday, June 28, 2010, with a recitation of the rosary by the Knights of Columbus at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, from 8:00 A.M. until time of services. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Mr. Broussard was born August 15, 1913, in the Prairie Gregg Community. He was a graduate of Erath High School, Class of 1933. While attending school, he drove the horse and buggy transporting students near his home to and from school. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II serving with the 128th Infantry where he was commissioned as a Sergeant. Upon completion of the war he returned home and began working for Jefferson Lake Oil Co. He then worked as a mechanic at Nettle Chevrolet in Abbeville for ten years, before leaving to begin his career with Texaco where he worked for 31 years. In 1943, he became a member of the Knights of Columbus in which he was an organizing member of the Erath Knights of Columbus Council 3872. In 1953, he became a 4th Degree Knight and served as Faithful Navigator for the 4th Degree Assembly. Mr. Broussard served as Grand Knight of the Erath Council three times during the years 1955-56, 1977-78, and 1983-84. His community involvements included being a member of the American Legion Post 279 since 1947, where he was in charge of the finances for the organization for seven years. He became a member of the Erath Volunteer Fire Department in 1947, and led the volunteers as Fire Chief for seven years. He was also a member of the Vermilion Cattlemen Association and was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church where he was a member of the Senior Holy Name Society and served as usher for 61 years. Leaving to cherish his memories are his son Vernon Broussard and his wife Margaret, his daughter-in-law Judy F. Broussard, his ten grandchildren, Scotty Broussard, Stephanie P. Broussard, Sy Paul Broussard, Courtney B. Vidallier and husband Brian, Erika B. Hargrave and husband Jason, Suzanne B. Mayard and husband Lenny, Suzette B. Stutes and husband Joshua, Nicholas Broussard, Allison Broussard, and Lindsay B. Abshire and husband Jed. He also is the great grandfather of 12, Hoyt F. Henry, Gabrielle Broussard, Rilee Grace, Owen and Andrew Stutes, Emma Kathryn and Sam Mayard, Jacob and Adam Vidallier, Matthew and Elise Hargrave, and Aaron Abshire. And his sister Lydie Butler. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Scotty, Sy, and Nicholas Broussard, his great grandson Hoyt F. Henry, and his dear friends Russell Delahoussaye and Gary Landry Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife Una Thibodeaux Broussard, his son Wilbur D. Broussard, his parents Ulger and Theresa Domingue Broussard, four sisters Electa Parquette, Sophie Clark, Nilda Labit, and Alice Falgout, three brothers, Alcide, M.C., and Martial Broussard.
