In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tax deductible contributions may be forwarded to Community First Bank payable to CFA, James B. Falterman, Sr. Memorial Fund to be used for scholarships or charitable organizations.
A native of St. Martinville and a resident of Jeanerette, Dr. Falterman died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 11:35 a.m. in a New Iberia Hospital.
Dr. Falterman was a 1953 graduate of Jeanerette Senior High School, a 1958 graduate of S.L.I. (currently U.L.L), and a 1962 graduate of L.S.U. Medical School. He practiced family medicine in Jeanerette for 47 years. He was assistant Iberia Parish Coroner since 1964, and Coroner since 1992. Dr. Falterman served as an expert witness and addiction medicine consultant for the 16th Judicial Court, and was the medical director for Iberia Medical Center Rural Health Clinic.
He was Board Certified with the following: the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Occupational Medicine. He was a Fellow of the American Association of Professional Hypnotherapists, and was a Diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Examiners, the American Board of Psychological Specialties, and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
Dr. Falterman was the past president of the Iberia Parish Medical Society, and Chief of Staff as well as Chairman of the Board of Iberia General Hospital. He was the past president of the Louisiana Coroners Association, and the medical director of New Beginnings Chemical Dependency Unit. He served as president of St. Joseph School Board and was a Eucharistic Minister and member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Jeanerette.
He published articles including the Baby Jane Doe Case published in the Forensic Examiner, and was in the process of publishing the Effects of the Abuse and Misuse of Oxycontin . He also wrote a series of articles on Forensic and Addiction Medicine in the Daily Iberian.
He served on the Jeanerette City Council for 7 years. Dr. Falterman was recognized as the VFW Man of the Year and Mr. Jeanerette. He was also recognized as the Jeanerette Chamber of Commerces Outstanding Citizen and Outstanding Professional.
His hobbies were hunting, fishing, cooking, and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, especially on Sundays.
Dr. Falterman is survived by his wife: Lorayne Walker Falterman of Jeanerette, his children: Dr. James B. Falterman, Jr. and wife Cynthia of New Iberia, Mary F. Bourgeois and husband Dr. Leonard Barrow Bourgeois of Jeanerette, Dr. Corinne F. Hebert and husband Ronald Hebert, Jr. of Jeanerette, Charles K. Falterman of Youngsville, David W. Falterman of Jeanerette, Stephen P. Falterman of Jeanerette, John A. Falterman and wife Anne of Jeanerette and Dr. Thomas J. Falterman and wife Dana of Baldwin, 16 Grandchildren: James, Kathryn, Corinne, Brittan, Leonard, Lorayne, Lawrence, Kristen, Tyler, Evan, Alex, Chad, Ashley, Thomas TJ , Lucas and Stella.
He was preceded in death by his parents: James J. Bonin and Marie Carlos Bonin Falterman, step father: Charles Buster Falterman and grandsons: Nicholas J. and William J. Falterman.
Pallbearers will be his sons: Dr. James B. Falterman, Jr., Charles K. Falterman, David W. Falterman, Stephen P. Falterman, John A. Falterman and Dr. Thomas J. Falterman.
Honorary Pallbearers will be: Dr. Leonard Barrow Bourgeois and Ronald R. Hebert, Jr.
The family would like to thank his staff, friends, and patients for allowing him to fulfill his love for his profession and community.
