Lauriel Merceron Legnon

August 17, 1930 — October 18, 2011

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m.,Thursday, 2011, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Jeanerette for Mrs. Junius J. Legnon, the former Lauriel Merceron, 81, who died October 18, at her residence. Celebrant will be Father Jody Simoneaux. Interment will follow at St. Johns Mausoleum. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 20, 2011 from 5 pm to 8 pm with a Rosary being led by Father Ed Degeyter at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will resume Thursday from 8 am until time of service.

A native and lifelong resident of Jeanerette, Lauriel was a homemaker who, by her choice, never worked outside of the home. She devoted her entire life to her husband and children and was the epitome of compassion and self-less giving. She was an excellent cook and will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her devotion to the Blessed Mother and her strong Catholic faith.

She was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, a past member of the Eucharistic Adorers Chapel, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and St. Josephs Booster Club.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Junius J. Legnon of Jeanerette; children Michael L. Legnon and wife, Diane of Lafayette; Elizabeth Liz L. Buteau and husband, Steve, John P. Legnon, and Joey G. Legnon and wife, Melanie, all of Jeanerette and Mary L. Jumonville and husband, David of New Iberia; her sisters, Merclyn M. Fletcher of Portland, Oregon and Phyllis M. Mendoza and husband, Mitch of New Iberia; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy L. Dupre of Lafayette; Doris T. Legnon and Rita L. Gouner of Jeanerette and Luna L. Spangler and husband Bert of Collins, Mississippi; 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Louis Merceron and Edith Merceron Deare; and one sister Louan M. Fontenot.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. Stephen Boudreaux and the nurses and staff of Acadiana Health Care for their unwavering support and care.

Pallbearers will be: Michael Legnon, John Legnon, Joey Legnon, Steven Buteau, Rhett Buteau, Seth Buteau, David Jumonville and Jarrod Legnon.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ignatius Rock Alfonso, Chris Legnon, Stephen Legnon, Jason Legnon, Josh Jumonville, Jacob Jumonville, Curtis Myers, Pat Napier, Dr. Stephen Boudreaux, Mitch Mendoza and Bert Spangler.

David Funeral Home, 400 Provost St., Jeanerette, 276-5151, is in charge of arrangements.
