Lucille Ackal Powell

Lucille Ackal Powell of New Iberia, born September 15, 1918 passed away peacefully on Monday, December 17 at Plaquemine Caring Nursing Home surrounded by her loving daughter Peggy Grant and granddaughter Pamela Mechana. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Ackal Sr. and Adele Gabriel Ackal, her four brothers, William Ackal, Joe Ackal, Louis Ackal and George Ackal, Jr., her three sisters, Stella Ackal Barnett, Lillian Ackal Johnson, and Elaine Ackal Dore. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Prentiss Powell, her two sons, Tommy Powell and Charles Powell of Lafayette and her son-in-law Carl Grant of Plaquemine, La. She is survived by her sister Marie Ackal Haik, her two daughters Peggy Powell Grant of Plaquemine, La. and Elizabeth Powell Carlson and son-in-law Glenn Carlson of Wilmington, NC. Lucille is also survived by her two daughters-in-law, Barbara Powell and Patricia Powell, both of Lafayette, her twelve grandchildren, Carol Ann Powell Strozier, Carl Prentiss Grant, Robert Grant, Robin Powell Champeaux, Terri Lynn Powell Boudreaux, Pamela Grant Mechana, Craig Powell, Melissa Powell, Peggy Powell Pryor, Michael Powell, Mark Carlson and Ashley Carlson Allen. She also had 21 great-grandchildren.

Lucille was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of the community, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Altrusian Club, and Mother Advisor to the Order of the Rainbow girls. She was an active member of her church she so dearly loved, the United Methodist Church of New Iberia. She was a true lady and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Services will be conducted on Thursday December 20, 2012 at 11:00AM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Bullock officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin Wednesday December 19, 2012 from 5:00PM until 9:00PM and will resume Thursday December 20, 2012 from 8:00AM until service time.
