Loreauville- A Mass of Christian Burial for Hazel Bienvenu Barras, age 81, will be held on Wednesday May 14, 2014 at 11:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Ed Degeyter to serve as the Celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at 3:00pm until 9:00pm with a recitation of the rosary at 6:00pm by the Knights of Columbus Council 4676. Visitation will resume on Wednesday May 14, 2014 from 8:00am until service time. A native of St. Martinville and resident of Loreauville, "Red" as she was affectionately known, passed away on Saturday May 10, 2014 at 11:50pm at a local hospital. Red was a graduate and Valedictorian of the Class of 1952 at St. Martinville Senior High and earned a scholarship to McNeese State University. Before becoming a homemaker, she worked as a Pharmacy Technician at Fournet Pharmacy for over 20 years. Red was an outstanding basketball player in her high school days and enjoyed visiting and getting together for lunch with her high school classmates throughout the years. She was an amazing cook and her children were especially fond of her Corn Moux Choux and Cabbage Casserole. Mrs. Barras' favorite past time were doing crossword puzzles, getting together with her family for cookouts and family reunions, and spoiling her grandkids. Mrs. Barras is survived by her children, Celeste B. Griffin and husband Tony, Kevin Louis Barras, Creed James Barras, Thomas Christopher Barras all of Loreauville, David Paul Barras and wife Linda of Lafayette; grandkids, Lauren Elizabeth Griffin, Lindsey Marie Griffin, Arielle Blanche Thibodeaux, Megan Mae Martin all of Lafayette, Courtney Ann Martin of Loreauville, Saraé Louisa Smith of Lydia, Lucas Paul Barras of Lafayette; sisters-in-law, Helen Albert Bienvenu of St. Martinville, Gaynell Barras of Loreauville; and brothers-in-law, Harold Sonnier of Broussard, and Oswald Barras and wife Lurlean of Lafayette. She was prededed in death by her husband, Gerald Louis Barras; parents, Eustis Bartholomew and Margaret Douet Bienvenu; in-laws, Paul and Edna Barras; sisters, Florence B. Bonin and husband Homer, Margaret B. Romero and husband Alcide, Edna B. Sonnier; and brothers, Lawrence "Rosco" Bienvenu, and Lester "Tot" Bienvenu. Pallbearers will be Kevin, Creed, Thomas, and David Barras, Tony Griffin, and Brent Romero. Honorary pallbearers will be Lucas Barras, Oswald Barras, and Harold Sonnier. The family would like to thank the 2nd floor nursing staff at Iberia Medical Center, Heart of Hospice, Dr. Ditch, Dr. Gulotta, and Quality Care Sitters for all of their care and compassion.
