Erath - Mrs. Vernida Louise Hebert Broussard, of Sugar Land, born in Erath, Louisiana, September 23, 1930, loving wife of Steven James Broussard, devoted daughter of Oda Hebert and Lelia Boudreaux Hebert left us today, September 28, 2014 after fighting the good fight for eight years, against the awful disease of dementia. Vernida was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Lanward Dennis Hebert. She is survived by her husband Steve, her children, son David Stephen Broussard, wife Carol, of Tomball, daughter Dana Broussard Grubich, husband Aldo of Sugar Land, son Gregory James Broussard, wife Sandra of Katy, son Scott Matthew Broussard, and wife Terri of Richmond. Her grandchildren Brian David Broussard, Christopher John Broussard, Amanda Broussard Carriage, husband Christopher, Colin James Broussard, Lelia Kaitlyn Broussard, Eric Scott Broussard and Steven Dennis Broussard. Her great grand-daughters, Devyn Paige Carriage, and Reagan Lynn Carriage. Her grandchildren and great granddaughters will serve as pallbearers. Vernida was raised in Freeport Texas where she was a drum major for the Freeport High EXPORTERS, then went on to be a member of the very first female majorette squad of 1948 University of Texas Longhorn Band, at that time, an all-male marching band. She and Steve married November 19, 1949 in Freeport Texas. Through the years they lived in Erath, Vinton & New Orleans, Louisiana, Freeport, Port Arthur, Richmond, & Plainview, Texas, and Tampa & Jacksonville, Florida following Steve's 42 year career with Occidental Chemical Co. After Steve's retirement they returned to Sugar Land Texas. Vernida always said they were so lucky to end up in retirement within 45 minutes of all their children and grandchildren. She left us today a stay at home mom, raising four very lucky kids, welcoming three daughters-in-law and one son-in-law, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and being a devoted wife, daughter and sister. A self-taught gourmet cook, long before Emeril, Bobby Flay or the food network, an unpaid seamstress sewing everything from curtains, to sports jackets to haute couture copies to baby bedding, an EMT with no formal medical training keeping a family of six healthy, a tutor who wrote grade A college English papers for college going family members. A nonjudgmental person, Ni loved her entire family unconditionally. Always a champion of the underdog, she more often than not sided with her daughters-in-law over her own sons. A nineteen year old child bride, with Steve at her side, traveled almost 65 years of marriage through all the peaks and valleys of growing up and old, suffering losses, and celebrating the good times. After raising her children, she became a career woman, a travel agent before computers, opened her own travel agency, JTV Travel, and then went on to become a wholesaler with Caribbean Holidays. She spent several years taking tour groups extensively throughout the Caribbean. A stay at home mom, devoted wife, career woman, all this and more.a world traveler, a home architect and designer, a floral arranger, a comedian who taught us all the value of self-deprecating humor , a woman who instilled love and enjoyment of family, compassion and empathy in her children, the list goes on. Our wife, our mom, our friend, our Ni. Forever in our hearts and minds, our memories are strong, and our souls are full. Funeral mass to be held at 11 o'clock in the morning, Thursday, October 2, at St Theresa's Catholic Church, Sugar Land TX. Reception to follow at Sugar Land Mortuary. Ashes will be interred at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, Monday, October 6, 2014 at in Our Lady of Lourdes cemetery, Erath, La. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Vernida's honor to the Alzheimer's Association in hopes of finding a cure for this devastating disease, or a charity of your choice. Special thank you to loving people who helped Vernida and family on this journey Dita, Ashley, Francis & Lina. David Funeral Home of Erath, 209 East Putnam Street, (337) 937-0405 will be handling the arrangements.
