Dorothy Dunaway Jay

March 25, 1927 — August 2, 2015

Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Dorothy Jay, 88, on Friday August 7, 2015 at 10:30 AM at David Funeral Home Chapel with Father Ed Deygeyter officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in New Iberia. Visitation will begin on Thursday, Aug 6, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Visitation will resume on Friday from 8:00AM until time of service. Mrs. Jay passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2015, at her residence. She was a native of Homer, Louisiana. Her father's job with the Texas Company moved her family to New Iberia, where she finished school, and afterward went to work at the Texas Company. One day, a handsome young engineer from Texas A&M walked in wearing cowboy boots, and stole her heart. Dorothy was wearing a white dress with little blue flowers on it, and when Lester saw her, he was smitten. They were married for 64 years. Lester accepted an engineering position with International Salt Company, and they moved to Avery Island, where they raised two daughters. Dorothy loved her family above all, and filled their home with warmth, comfort, and love. She was the perfect example of a Godly wife and mother. Dorothy is loved and will be missed by two daughters, Judy Jay Green, wife of Dr. David Green, and Sally Jay, wife of Dr. Karl Mahaffey. Also surviving her are four grandchildren: Benjamin Green (wife Jeanne Badeaux Green), Andrew Green (wife Morgan Rainey Green), Mary Frances Green, and Jay Ferguson (fianceé Sarah Reinhardt). She was preceded in death by her beloved Lester; her mother, Mary Blackburn Dunaway; father, Rudolph Polk Dunaway; and sisters, Betty Dunaway and Gwenda Dunaway Patterson. Dorothy loved family traditions, and began many which will be carried on through her future generations. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. Lester called her "the grandmother extraordinaire", and he was right. Nothing was better after a day at the park or in the pool than eating a hamburger at "McMammaw's". When the answer was "no" from their own parents, the typical response from the grandchildren was a pouty face and a "Well, Mammaw would do it!" And, usually, she would. Dorothy was a gracious Southern lady, an expert in the kitchen, an exemplary hostess, and a talented seamstress. She had a sharp wit and a keen sense of humor. Hers was a generous heart and she was a loyal friend to many. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of New Iberia, where for many years she took delight in teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. To honor Mrs. Jay's memory, donations may be made to The Louisiana Baptist Childrens' Home, PO Box 4196, Monroe, LA. 71211.
