A native of Weeks Island and resident of Jeanerette, Mrs. Elsie passed away in her home surrounded by family on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 11:28pm. She was 79 years of age. Mrs. Charpentier was a very caring soul, who loved her Church and socializing among her church family. She was well known for her "Cool Cups", selling them with a smile to the community, and donating the proceeds to the Church. Mrs. Elsie never met a stranger, and could be remembered completing her word search puzzles. Everyone could look forward to her jokes, and her presence in the room always created a light and loving atmosphere. Mrs. Elsie was known among the community as the last walking carrier of the paper route, a responsibility she proudly fulfilled for twenty five years. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and she will be missed dearly by those who were honored with the opportunity to have her in their lives. She is survived by her sons, Darren Charpentier and wife Beulah of Franklin; Karl Charpentier of Jeanerette; Grandson Shannon Landry of New Iberia; Granddaughters Marsha Landry of Westwego; Tiffany Suire and husband Drew of Avery Island; and Brother Beverly Derouen of New Iberia. She is preceded in death by her husband James L. Charpentier; father Lawrence Derouen, Sr.; mother Odell Borel Derouen; brother Lawrence Derouen, jr.; and sister Betty Dupuis. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers for the funeral ceremony. The family would like to extend their loving gratitude to NSI Hopsice, The Cancer Center of Acadiana at Lafayette General Hospital, Miles Perret Cancer Center, Melissa Hebert, and Regina Verret for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations to be made to the Lydia Cancer Association, 5319 Smith Rd. New Iberia, LA 70560.
