James Walter "Shorty" Payne

June 13, 1935 — October 10, 2015

New Iberia- Funeral services for Mr. James Walter Payne, age 80, will be held on Thursday October 15, 2015 at 11:00am at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Scott Bullock to serve as the Celebrant. Interment will follow at Beau Pre Mausoleum. Visitation will begin on Wednesday October 14, 2015 from 3:00pm until 9:00pm and continue on Thursday October 15, 2015 from 8:00am until service time. A native of Greensburg, Kentucky and resident of New Iberia, "Shorty" as he was affectionately known passed away on Saturday October 10, 2015 at 4:15pm. Mr. Payne served as a Mechanic and Mechanical Supervisor for Fruit of a Loom for over 25 years. He lived to work and took great pride in what he did, and how he did it. In his free time Mr. Payne enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Although he worked a great deal throughout his life, his greatest accomplishment was the family he raised with his beloved wife of 39 years, Deatte Wilcox Payne. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Marlene Payne Robin and husband Clark of St. Martinville, Margaret Payne Etie of St. Martinville, Mary Kay Payne Clark and husband David of Campbellsville, KY, Vernon Edward Payne and companion Jose Cabrero of Horsecave, Kentucky, Shirley Nolen and husband Dean Sr. of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Tim Champagne and wife Gloria of Branch, LA, Misty Broussard and husband Roger Sr. of St. Martinville, Christy Champagne and companion Joshua Baldwin of St. Martinville, Brandy Pitarre of Covington, Joshua Robin and companion Hollie Jurisih of Covington, Brandon Lovoi of Baton Rouge, James Reed Payne and wife Stephanie of Parks, Katie Talbert and husband Nathan of Nashville, TN, Susan Garner and fiancé Jason Bodin of Abbeville, Steven Clark and wife Kim of Campbellsville, KY, Tiffany New and husband Ricky of Eubank, KY, Paul Nolen of Baton Rouge, Dean Nolen Jr. and fiancé Ashley Deville of Baton Rouge, and Kimberly Nolen and companion Wakeland Harriman of Ruston; twenty-nine great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Deatte LaRue Wilcox Payne; parents, Martin Roscoe Payne and Ollie Francis Warren Payne; sons, James Martin Payne and Robert Beck Jr.; great granddaughter, Sambrea Marlene Champagne; siblings, Violet Whitson, Virginia Creason, and David Payne. Upholding the honor of Pallbearers are Tim Champagne, Paul Nolen, Dean Nolen Jr., Steven Clark, Jason Bodin, and Reed Payne. Honorary Pallbearers will be Roger Broussard Sr, Landon Champagne, Christian Champagne, and Charles Champagne. Friends and family wishing to express condolences can sign the online guestbook.
