New Iberia - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Mrs. Lula Mae Champagne Thomas, age 91, on Friday, October 16, 2015 at 1:00PM at St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. William Blanda officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, October 16, 2015 at David Funeral Home of New Iberia, from 9:00 AM until time of service, with a recitation of the Rosary at 11:00AM. "Lou" as she was affectionately known passed away on Sunday October 11, 2015 at 8:15AM at her residence. Mrs. Thomas was born on September 25, 1924 in New Iberia to Valcour and Alida Romero Champagne. She worked with the Naval Department in New Orleans and worked as a Legal Secretary, but she spent most of her life as a Homemaker. Mrs. Thomas enjoyed baking, working in her yard and was a member of the New Iberia Garden Club. Her love of shopping was her favorite. She was a devout Catholic and was a Parishioner of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She was a devoted wife to her husband of 60 years, Mr. W. J. "Bill" Thomas Jr., and a loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Thomas will best be remembered as a strong willed, independent woman, who always told it like it is. Mrs. Thomas is survived by her daughters, Mary Kathryn "Kay" Thomas of New Iberia and Deborah Theresa Thomas of Asheville, NC; son, William Jefferson "Mac" Thomas III and wife Tere of New Iberia; eight grandchildren, Jeff Michael DeRouen and wife Julie of New Iberia, Andrew Wynn DeRouen and wife Aimee, Kylee Hodge Decuir of Pleasant Valley, IA, Ryan Barrett Thomas of Youngsville, Berkeley Lonnett Armstrong and husband Daryll of Ponchatoula, William Cade Thomas and wife Nicole of Lafayette, Erin Leigh Haik and husband Eric of New Iberia, and Grant Evans Thomas and wife Summer of New Iberia; her sister, Lucille Dugas of New Iberia; and seventeen great grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her four sisters, Lavenia Fairley, Willa Delhomme, Thelma Breaux, Ruby Chamapagne; and six brothers, Jim Champagne, Harold Champagne, Andrew Champagne, Edwin Champagne, Henry Champagne and Outhwaite Champagne. Upholding the honor of Pallbearers are Jeff Michael DeRouen, Andrew Wynn DeRouen, Ryan Barrett Thomas, William Cade Thomas, Grant Evans Thomas and Avery Michael DeRouen. The family would like to thank Mrs. Thomas' caregivers Marcie Walker, Nikki Youman, Shannon Smith, Jazmine Walker, Jamie Walker, and Shirley Wells for all of their love and care through the years.
