New Iberia—Mitchell Joseph Mendoza passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 7:25 pm at Lafayette General Hospital, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren giving him the gift of their love by ushering him to the end of his journey. Mitchell was born in St. Mary Parish to Oday and Mabel Andre Mendoza and was a longtime resident of Jeanerette, before moving to New Iberia.
Mitchell spent four years serving his country as a U.S. Marine, stationed for a time in the Philippines. After leaving the military, Mitchell’s career included the position of General Manager for the local Coca Cola bottling company; he briefly owned his own business, finally transitioning into the offshore food service industry in Alaska. He returned to Louisiana to continue in the food service industry as an Operations Manager in the Gulf of Mexico until his retirement.
Mitchell enjoyed spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed being with and cooking for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed meeting regularly with “The Coffee Club,” a special group of friends, for coffee and visiting.
Mitchell had one special buddy, Cheyenne, who was a constant companion who will miss his “Papa” dearly.
Left to cherish Mitchell’s memory is his wife of 56 years Phyllis Merceron Mendoza, his two sons; Scott Mendoza and his wife Alison of New Iberia, Mannie Mendoza and wife Brandi of Jeanerette, two daughters; Michelle Mendoza Cloud and her husband Richard of Jeanerette, Mollie Mendoza Stelly and her husband David of Grand Coteau, one brother; Calvin Mendoza and his wife Charlotte of Missouri, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents Oday and Mabel Andre Mendoza, one sister; Eva M. Ball and one brother; Murphy Mendoza.
In an intimate ceremony with family, Father J. Miller, administered the last sacrament. Arrangements for a memorial mass will be announced at a later date. Mitchell will be laid to rest with his mother and father in St. Johns Cemetery in Jeanerette, LA.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. John Higginbotham for his tender care guiding Mitchell at the end of his journey.
