A resident of New Iberia and Baton Rouge, Mr. Long passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 11:44AM at a local hospital.
Mr. Long was born to George Sr. and Doris Long in Hot Springs, AR, and grew up in Monroe, LA. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy from which he received an honorable discharge. He retired as a welder from Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 198 after numerous years of service.
Mr. Long was a fantastic musician and could play any instrument you put in his hands, but his bread and butter was the Banjo. His musical prowess led to on state accompaniments with other talented musicians such as David Allen Coe, Emmylou Harris, and John Prine. When Mr. Long wasn’t strumming on the old banjo he could be found in the air or on the water. He was licensed pilot and enjoyed flying many different types of aircrafts, his favorite being the Cessna 140 which he nicknamed “Buzzbug”. Mr. Long was also an avid sailor and enjoyed being aboard his 32 foot MacGregor sailboat with the wind at his back and the sunshine on his face. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 50 years, Rose Mary Long of New Iberia; two sons, James Long and wife Kristi of New Iberia, and Jeremy Lane Long of Augusta, GA; sixteen grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and one sister, Rebecca Bertinot and husband Ronald of Baker.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Allen Long Sr; mother, Doris LaGrane Long; and sister, Deborah Lynn Conrad.
Upholding the honor of Pallbearers will be Family and Friends.
