New Iberia – Funeral services will be conducted for Mr. Richard Thomas “Dick” Rice, 94, on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at 11:00 AM at the David Funeral Home Chapel of New Iberia, with Pastor Andy Starks officiating.  Burial will follow at Beau Pre’ Mausoleum.

A native of Antigo, WI and lifelong resident of New Iberia, Mr. Rice passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at 6:45 AM in New Iberia.

Mr. Rice never faltered or waivered from his deeply rooted Christian beliefs.  A courageous soldier wounded during the Battle of the Bulge receiving the honor of the Purple Heart, and WWII Veteran, Mr. Rice achieved the rank of Army Tank Sergeant of the 9th Armored Division 14th tank battalion Company D.  Mr. Rice was honorably discharged from his military service and enjoyed a beautiful and happy 70 year marriage to the love of his life and light in his soul, the former Miss Geraldine Delcambre, whom he met in 1944 at Fort Polk while there on maneuvers.  This Holy union blessed him with three wonderful children.  When time permitted after being honorably discharged, Mr. Rice became an avid golfer, fisherman and enjoyed bowling.  Never fearful of hard work or manual labor, he would spend any free time helping those he loved to build houses and camps.  Mr. Rice retired after 30 continuous years of employment with National Supply as a pump repairman.  Never a quiet moment for Mr. Rice, even in his 34 years of retirement he remained very active with his family and the community.  His true passion was travelling and spending as much time with his loving wife, family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mrs. Geraldine Delcambre Rice; his son, Randy T. Rice and wife Madelyn of Lafayette; daughters, Mrs. Phyllis R. Patton and husband Kenny of New Iberia, Mrs. Karen R. Stringer and husband Chuck of Harahan; and sister, Miss Eileen G. Stogbauer of Hartford, WI.

He was preceded in death by his father, Amos Rice; step-father, Orin Gehrke; mother, Catherine Davey Gehrke; sisters, Betty Snowden and Charlotte Linsdau and brother Terrance Rice.

Serving as pallbearers will be Charlie Rice, Kenny Patton, Chuck Stringer, Brian Blanchard, Chap Gary and Michael Bunker.
