New Iberia – A Home Going Celebration honoring and reflecting upon the life of the late Mr. Charles Thomas Mahoney will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM followed by services at 1:00 PM, all to be held at The Assembly Christian Center of New Iberia, with Pastor Paul Neel serving as the Celebrant. Interment will follow with Military Honors at Beau Pre’ Mausoleum.
Born on August 28, 1923 in Washington D.C. from the union of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Mahoney. Mr. Charles Mahoney, age 93, died on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 5:45 PM at home, surrounded by his loving family.
At the young age of 19, Mr. Charles enlisted and entered the United States Navy to Honorably serve his country for over three years, achieving the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class. Mr. Charles served aboard the U.S.S. LONG (DMS12), until its sinking from enemy action on January 6, 1945 at 1:00 PM, while conducting minesweeping operations in the Philippine Theatre. Mr. Charles survived this sinking and was rescued by the U.S.S. HOVEY (DMS11). On January 7, 1945 at 4:50 AM the U.S.S. HOVEY (DMS11) was sunk due to enemy action. Surviving these double sinking’s earned him the distinguished recognition as “Twicer”. During his active duty Mr. Charles received six stars for his participation in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, two stars in the Philippine Liberation, and numerous ribbons and accolades.
After his Honorable Discharge in 1946, Mr. Charles attained his degree in Petroleum Engineering from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla, MO. Charlie was employed by Texaco and they lived in Bogota, Colombia from 1957-1964. He was then transferred to New Iberia where he and his family have resided ever since.
He worked in the Gulf, still for Texaco, from 1964 until he took early retirement at 62 years of age in 1985. He went back to work as a consultant for Texaco in their LAWA Operation until 1992, at which point he fully retired.
Mr. Charles married his true love and soulmate, the former Miss Patricia Broyles on September 1, 1951 in Rolla, MO. Throughout this blissful and fruitful marriage, she remained the stars in his eyes, and his most favorite place to be was always anyplace his wife was. Following his full retirement, they remained in New Iberia. Mr. Charles was for many years, an active board member at the Assembly Christian Center of New Iberia and active member there since 1974. A deeply religious man, he read the bible daily and reared his children in a loving Christian environment. Some of his fondest memories are those of taking his family camping or swimming at the beach. Known by many as the “Master of Chicken Soup and Gumbo”, he thoroughly enjoyed cooking for his friends and family, rightfully earning him such distinction.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Mrs. Patricia Broyles Mahoney of New Iberia; Sons, Michael B. Mahoney and Martha of New Iberia, Patrick K. Mahoney and Tara of Loreauville, Carey S. Mahoney and Henny, John T. Mahoney and Jill, Mark T. Mahoney and Geniece all of New Iberia; 19 Grandchildren, Nicole M. Gardener and Kaleb, Angela M Guillory and T.J., Margaret M. Pope and Michael, Molly Mahoney, Katie Mahoney, twins; Brenna M. Larson and Boone of New Orleans and Dacie M. Larson and Clint of Youngsville, Sean Mahoney and Jeanne, Makenzie Mahoney, Jon-David Mahoney and Kaylee of Lafayette, Janna M. Zeigler and Jon of Los Angeles, CA, Jessica Mahoney, Joi Mahoney, Juliane Mahoney, Ja`el Mahoney, Mallory M. Reale and Anthony, Shannon M. Wright and Timothy, Connor T. Mahoney and Allison C. Mahoney; 20 Great grandchildren; Xavier, D.J., Evelyn, Kylyend, Bailey, Landon, Audrey, Mikey, Christian, Lauryn, Kennedy, Dash, Ava, Flynn, Avery, Isabella, Julia, Ana, Charlie and Quinn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Mr. Joseph A. Mahoney and the former Miss. Winnifred Leonard of MA and his three brothers, Joseph, George and Richard Mahoney.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Michael B. Mahoney, Patrick K Mahoney, Carey S. Mahoney, John T. Mahoney, Mark T. Mahoney, and Timothy S. Broyles. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Jon-David Mahoney, Sean C. Mahoney, Connor T. Mahoney, Richard Mahoney, Thomas Mahoney, Brian Mahoney and Mark Shively.
