A native and lifelong resident of Erath, “Red” passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016. He was a hard worker all his life having retired from the Jefferson Island Salt Mines after thirty-two and a half years of service while never missing a single day of work but being a man true to his nature he refused to stop there. Upon retirement he became a well known Shrimp Salesman for over thirteen years and also worked on small engine repair. His wife and children’s fondest memories were of him when he needed a drink of water saying, “the camel is dry”. Mr. Darby always went above and beyond to provide for his wife of sixty-four years and their eight children. He will be missed by all who loved him.
Left to honor and cherish Ashton’s memory are his wife, Anna Benoit; his children, daughters, Connie and husband Keith Theriot, Dianna Veronie and husband Carl, Deborah and husband Wade Lacoste, Nita and husband Cardell Clement, Vickie and husband Dean Renard, Annette and husband Mike Trahan Jr., and Celeste Darby; son Richard Darby and his companion Christy Romero. Red was also survived by his twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren; and his dog named “Sweetie”.
Red was preceded in death by his parents Luke and Alice Smith Darby; his grandson Wade “Pete” Lacoste Jr; great granddaughter Anna Grace Lacoste, and his eleven siblings.
Upholding the honor of pallbearers are Richard Darby, Keith Theriot, Mike Trahan, Christopher Lacoste, Brandon Clement, Tyler Cherrie, and Mark Hollier.
The family would like to give special thanks to Acadian Hospice and Palliative Care and Christy Romero.
