New Iberia- A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Mr. Eddie Edward Labit Jr, age 78, on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 10:00AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Fr. Bill Melancon to serve as the Celebrant with musical accompaniment by Gene Picard. Reading from scripture will be Trudy Romero. Giftbearers will be Aleah Romero, Shirley Broussard, Linda Zeringue, and Irene Champagne. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 10:00AM until 9:00PM with a recitation of the Rosary at 7:00PM by the Men’s Rosary Group. Visitation will continue on Friday, December 9, 2016 from 8:00AM until service time.
A native of Coteau and resident of New Iberia, Mr. Labit passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 2:26AM at a his residence.
In his younger days, Mr. Labit enjoyed the game of baseball. His passion for the game carried throughout the years. Even as an older man he played in the Old Timers Softball League. He also enjoyed participating in the Barrel Pickup at the rodeo and in horseshows with his partner and friend C.L. Viator. Rabbit hunting was also a favorite of his.
Mr. Labit enjoying going to the casino to visit with friends and play the slot machines. He was an all around do-it-yourselfer. He could fix and anything and enjoyed doing it. From plumbing to electrical he was a Jack of all trades.
As a devout catholic Mr. Labit attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help every Saturday. He was also a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. His fondest memories were those spent with his grandsons and great grandchildren. He had a big heart and he will be sadly missed by all.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Cheryl Romero and husband Nathan of New Iberia; three grandsons, Jeremy Romero, Jerrod Romero and fiancée Daphne Greene, and Josh Romero all of New Iberia; great grandchildren, Hailey Romero of Erath, Jansen Romero of Erath, Mallory Romero of Washington D.C., Aleah Romero of New Iberia, Jax Romero of New Iberia; two sisters, Nell Davis and husband Gerald of Houston, TX, and Loyce Barrilleaux of San Antonio, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecile Romero Labit; father, Eddie Edward Labit Sr; mother, Elenie Waguespack Labit; brother, Autry Labit; brother, Sexon Labit Sr; Sister, Eldine Latiolais; and nephew, Brian Labit Sr.
Upholding the honor of Pallbearers are Kenneth "Kenny" Labit, Sexon Labit Jr, Troy Romero, Jeremy Romero, Jerrod Romero, and Josh Romero. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jax Romero and Larry Broussard.
