October 14, 1918 — December 28, 2016

New Iberia – Funeral services will be conducted for Sadie “MiMI” Snellgrove Stockstill, 98, at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 30, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Bullock officiating. Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the First United Methodist Church at 119 Jefferson St. in New Iberia on Friday, December 30, 2016, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

Mrs. Stockstill was born on October 14, 1918 in Bayou Chene, LA and was lifted up to Heaven on December 28, 2016 in New Iberia.

While it is very difficult to compose a fitting tribute to someone as outstanding and loved as “MiMi”, it is simultaneously easy to find fitting words to describe her life and the profound contributions that she made to all around her.  Qualities such as persistence, tenacity, self-reliance and a strong desire to “do the right thing” are the gold standards by which she patterned her life. Brought into this earthly life at the end of World War I and living a childhood severely impacted by the Great Depression, her personal strength of character and equally strong desire to succeed were influenced by her strong sense of family (four brothers and two sisters) and community, in particular her friends and family “on” Bayou Chene, Louisiana. As a mother, spouse, sister, and friend to all, she chose to “lead by example” and faithfully abided by the Golden Rule. Her faith and upbringing in the Methodist Church acted as a foundation and reinforcing strength in all that she pursued. As an example of her sense of community, she participated in a number of church-related and civic-related projects including a very early version of what was termed as the “Handicapped Childrens Clinic” in New Iberia and as a charter member in the very early development of the “Taster’s Luncheon”, a long-lived project of the Women’s Club of the First United Methodist Church. Relative to her church activities, she acted as a volunteer teacher in Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and was always available to assist in every capacity within the church community. MiMi was a life-time member (76 years) of the Wisteria Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and served as the Associate Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She also actively supported her beloved husband, Wesley, and his participation the Masonic Lodge (Freemasons – Aurora Lodge #193 and Hugh M. Daspit Lodge #301) and was an active supporter of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and the Order of DeMolay. Sadie, as she was known to friends and extended family, and MiMi to immediate family, was also an outstanding “master of the kitchen” and her many outstanding recipes are a part of the Snellgrove Family Cookbook.  In fact, she pre-dated the current trend of “Farm to Table” cuisine by being a Master Gardener and using all of the fresh fruit and vegetables from her backyard to complement her cooking skills in a masterful way. In the latter third of her life, she enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends in the New Iberia community, and was always known as a very competitive and excellent player based upon the many stories generated by these same friends. She took great pleasure in regaling all of her family about her bridge expertise, but her sense of competitiveness never exceeded her joy that she received from being with her bridge “partners and friends”. MiMi deeply loved and cherished her family, her faith, and her community of friends, and her influence upon all who knew and loved here will be forever held in the highest esteem. “No more worry, tears or fear – eternal joy and peace are here”. JWS

Stockstill and his wife Mary N. of Alpharetta, GA; her daughter, Cynthia Stockstill King of Homer, LA; her grandchildren, Ashley King, James Montgomery, III, Mark Montgomery, Rebecca Baudoin, John William King, Jr., John Matthew Stockstill and Elizabeth Stockstill; her great grandchildren, Kelyn Soileau, Andrew Montgomery and Gabrielle King and her great great grandchildren, Lily Grace Gauthier and Ezra Thibodeau.
