New Iberia – A Memorial Service will be held for Captain John W. Smietana, 78 on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 1:00 PM at the Ramada Inn on Center St. (LA Hwy 14) in New Iberia. Following the Memorial Service a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Ramada. Light refreshments will be offered with many stories and tall tales.
Captain John W. Smietana, 78, died on Sunday, January 8, 2017, at Iberia Medical Center.
Born March 8, 1938, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, John’s family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in the 1950’s, where he met his wife, Jean, who was by his side for 58 years.
In addition to his 30 years at sea in the marine industry, he served two years in the Florida National Guard. John was also an excellent cook, loved to travel the world and built antique marine engines, many of which will be displayed in museums across the United States.
He is survived and missed by his loving wife, Frances Jean, their three children, David, Laura and Lynn, his siblings, Joanne Nixon and Stephen Smietana; eight grandchildren Jonathan, Rachel, Cheryl, Morgan, Megan, Jake, Molly, Caroline and five great-grandchildren, along with many friends and all the members of the Bayou Old Time Engine Association.
Pre John’s wishes, he will be cremated and scattered at sea joining his late parents.
