Jacqueline Joyce Cannon

November 18, 1933 — January 28, 2017

New Iberia - On the evening of January 28, 2017, Jacqueline Owensby Cannon was called to the Lord and passed away peacefully of natural causes with her family gathered by her side. She was 83 years old.

Jackie was born on November 18, 1933 in Shamrock, Oklahoma as the ninth child to Benjamin and Zeffie Gooch Owensby. On January 7, 1952, Jackie wed Leroy Cannon. Through this union, three daughters were born: Sherol, Susan, and Andrea. Jackie spent her days as a devoted wife, gracious mother and homemaker, as Leroy worked hard, eventually owning his own business as an oilfield consultant. His work took them from Oklahoma to live in Maracaibo, Venezuela for 14 years before returning to the states, where the family settled in New Iberia, Louisiana in 1966.

After retirement, Jackie and Leroy found joy spending time at their hunting and fishing camp on the Pearl River in Mississippi and watching the New Orleans Saints on television. She also loved taking care of her fur children through the years: Brittany and Sassy, and grand-dog Cooper.

Jackie was a lifelong University of Oklahoma fan, always cheering on the OU football team, most recently with their exciting win in the Sugar Bowl. An avid reader, she spent nights reading scripture from the Bible and romance novels. Jackie enjoyed playing Pokeno with friends and card games with her grandchildren. Her German chocolate cake was always baked to perfection. She was happy in the kitchen: baking banana nut bread, making waffles for breakfast and entertaining friends. Jackie loved being outdoors planting flowers and feeding the birds (and squirrels) in her backyard.

Jackie is survived by her daughters, Sherol Penton, Susan (Fred) Dorris, and Andrea Strickland; five grandchildren, Jessica (Troy) Leleux, Jennifer (Bennett) Waites, Holly LeJeune, Michael and Sarah Strickland; six great-grandchildren, Andrew, Amelia, Luke and Lillian Leleux, Cannon Waites and Adalyn LeJeune; and four sisters, one of which is Dorothy Cannon.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Leroy Cannon; her parents, Benjamin and Zeffie Owensby; and seven brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held at Beau Pre' Cemetery Wednesday, February 1, 2017 from 1:00 PM until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 PM, with burial to follow.
