Mr. Herbert went home to be with the Lord Jesus on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at 9:28 PM. At the moment of his passing he was surrounded by his loving family as they were praying the divine mercy chaplet, and right as they finished the prayers he took his final breath. This would be a testament to a life time of honor and commitment to God, family and his country.

Mr. Hebert was born into the rich French Acadian Culture right here in New Iberia on October 6, 1941. He was a very bright young man and upon graduating from NISH he would pursue a life filled with a passion for learning. His first endeavor to further his education began at SLI, where he would earn at BA in Speech and French. While attending college, he would respond to the calling of our great nation by joining the Air Force Reserved Officer Trainer Corps to pursue his dreams and serve his country. His diligent efforts in the military would eventually earn him the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force. Balancing the military and his education was key to the accomplished legacy that he left behind.

Herbert was employed by the Iberia Parish School for many years and had many roles during his career that included teacher, guidance counselor, educational specialist, and would later become Head Master of Epiphany Day School. During this time his, perseverance towards his dreams would pay off as he would earn his Doctorate from McNeese University. He became a counselor at USL and SLCC and truly enjoyed giving students the necessary tools and advice to further their education.

He was proud of his Cajun heritage and was a member of Renaissance Acadienne. Some of the cultural activities he loved were French dancing and singing in French. He would also use his education in French to teach. Some of his hobbies included hunting, fishing, cooking, traveling and photography. Later in life after retiring, he would become a Certified Master Gardener and was co-founder of Gabrielle Acres Farm to proudly bring his harvest to New Iberia Farmers Market. Some of his best crops were honey, pecans, and herbs however, it was not uncommon to find figs and citrus in his garden. Although many of his accomplishments were admired, nothing could compete with the love and loyalty towards his family. He will be deeply missed and his legacy will always remain in the hearts of his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gabrielle “Gail” Lassalle of New Iberia; his children, Brett Hebert and his wife Janis of New Iberia, Christopher Hebert and his wife Heather of Youngsville, Gabrielle Trotter and her husband Jonathan and Stephanie DePrima and her husband Russell all of New Iberia; his sister, Cynthia Dake and her husband Mike of New Iberia; his brother Gerald Hebert of New Iberia; seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
