Born September 18, 1928, John Dallas Hulin, the youngest of eight children on the Jefferson Island would be best remembered as “J.D.”. Or, maybe you know him as Pappy, Poppa, Daddy, Poppa Stoppa, Fast Hand, Uncle Jay… This character of a man was known to many by many endearing names. He was a jokester, a man of riddles, card tricks and clues. The “man in the hat, with the black dog, and the long cigar”, he was J.D. Hulin, loved by many.
J.D.’s first job, as a youngster was cleaning the bear cage at the Jefferson House. He always said that a bear will run away if you squirt water in its face! We never doubted him either. After his 16th birthday he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. A bit young, but nonetheless, he was eager to serve and off he went. Upon his return, 4 years later, a “worldly educated” J.D. decided to take adult education night classes in Delcambre. That is where the magic began for him and his future love, for the class was taught by none other than his future wife of 60 years, Camay LaHood Hulin. Needless to say, he passed he class. After a few in Lake Charles, J.D. and his growing family returned to Jefferson Island to work at the Diamond Crystal Salt Mine. He worked there from 1958 until he retired in 1985. On Nov. 20, 1980, on that tragic day that the salt dome was penetrated, J.D. was the Safety Sup. On duty and was very proud to have helped evacuate all 55 mine personnel in the dome without incident. After their retirements J.D., Camay, and son Greg (Schicka) spent many happy years at their camp at Cypremort Point. Their door was always open and their cook pot was always full and simmering on the stove! Anyone and everyone. J.D. loved to hunt, fish, trawl, cook, travel, tell jokes, play tricks, talk and laugh! He never met a stranger! Both Mimi and Pappy loved having their children, and grandchildren visit and fish with them at the camp. Together, J.D. and Camay were the perfect balance for one another; now, joined again, at last… We will miss them both, but know that they are reunited forever.
Survivors include: sons Michael, Eric and Greg (Schicka) Hulin; daughter Rene’ Hulin; grandchildren Doug and wife Kristen Morgan, Chrystal and husband Mike Aber, Jacob Morgan of Ohio, Travis, Danielle, Nick and wife Amanda Hulin; great grandchildren Isabella, Peyton and Malachi of Ohio; Sister in law Katherine (Kitty) LaHood and Brother in law Anthony (Tony) LaHood; family friend Denise Anderson; numerous loving nieces and nephews.
J.D. is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Camay LaHood Hulin; his son Karl Hulin; daughter in law Cindy Barras Hulin; parents Etazia Norris and Giles Hulin; and siblings Laurie, Preston, Alton, Eddie, Daures, and twin sisters Mabel and Sabel.
