New Iberia – Funeral services will be conducted for Donald G. Blanchard, 93, on Monday, October 8, 2018, at 12:00 PM at St. Peters Catholic Church with Father Brian Gary officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Family Mausoleum with Military Honors conducted by the Iberia Veterans Honor Guard and the U. S. Army Honor Detail.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 8, 2018, from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM and a Rosary will be prayed in the funeral home at 10:00 AM.
Born in St. Martin Parish, raised in Franklin and a resident of New Iberia, Mr. Blanchard passed away at his residence on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at
9:25 PM.
Mr. Blanchard graduated from Hanson Memorial High School in 1941. Joining the US Army on August 13, 1943, he was assigned to the 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. Army Sargent Blanchard landed on Normandy Beach the evening of D-Day and fought as a gunner on a Tank Destroyer referred to as “Hell on Wheels” in support of the US First Army and US Third Army. He served in the Battle of St. Lo, Battle of the Buldge and eventually crossed the Rhine River into Germany.
He retired from Entex, formerly United Gas, after 40 years of employment. He enjoyed gardening and worked with the Acadiana Bird Club and had a very special devotion to his pets. He was a loyal member of the Catholic High Panther Club.
He is survived by his sons, Kenneth Blanchard, Sr. and his wife Jane of Lafayette, Jody P. Blanchard of Sunset, Travis Blanchard, Sr. and his wife Kimberly of Abbeville; his daughter, Joy DeCourt of New Iberia; his grandchildren, Kenneth Blanchard, Jr., Elizabeth Couvillion and her husband Jeremy, Rebecca Agent and her husband Charles, Sr., Bradley Blanchard and his wife Jenna, Travis Blanchard, Jr., Brittan Edler and her husband Dustin, Jacob Blanchard, Olivia Blanchard, Jeremy DeCourt and his wife Bliss and Jamie DeCourt and his great grandchildren, Camille Blanchard, Benjamin Couvillion, Clara Jane Couvillion, Allie DeCourt, Eli Arnaud, McKay Agent, Charles Agent, Jr., Macy DeCourt and Jacques DeCourt.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Gilda Simoneaux Blanchard; his parents, Frank Joseph Blanchard and Rose Verret Blanchard; his brothers, J. F. Blanchard and Verret Blanchard; his sister, Josie Sinitere and his grandson, Benjamin Blanchard.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Blanchard, Jr., Bradley Blanchard, Travis Blanchard, Jr., Jacob Blanchard, Jeremy DeCourt and Ronald Sinitere.
Honorary pallbearer is Benjamin Blanchard.
The family would like to thank the Staff at Garden View Assisted Living, Amedisys Hospice and his many caregivers especially Shelia, Betty and Mary.
