Irvin Joseph Bergeron

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Mr. Irvin Joseph Bergeron, age 91, at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 19, 2018, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Father Jody Simoneaux will be celebrating the mass. Burial will follow in St. John the Evangelist Mausoleum with Military Honors conducted by Iberia Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a recitation of the rosary at 7:00 PM by the Men’s Rosary Group. Visitation will resume on Friday, October 19 2018 from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM.
Mr. Bergeron passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 6:00 AM. .

He was born on January 3, 1927 to James J. Bergeron Sr. and Lillian Evans Bergeron. He was a native and lifelong resident of Jeanerette. He was a devout Catholic, having served St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Jeanerette as altar boy, usher, lector, and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Board of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine in Jeanerette.

He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, trained for and was selected as a member of the Amphibious Corps, which attacked enemy forces throughout the South Pacific. His unit operated with the amphibious attack ship U.S.S. Montrose-APA-212. The ship was engaged in many battles, including the Battle of the Philippines and the final big battle of Okinawa. He was awarded numerous commendations, including a Presidential Citation.
Upon his return from the war, he attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now University of Louisiana-Lafayette) and majored in Accounting & Business Administration.

He then began working in the sugar industry as his father did for 42 years, and his grandfather did for 43 years. He was given the position of Payroll Clerk/Typist/Timekeeper at St. Mary Sugar Cooperative, Inc. from the first day of operations of this newest Louisiana sugar mill. After 20 years of service and promotions, he transferred to the much larger and newer Cajun Sugar Cooperative, Inc. and served there another 20 years as Executive Vice President and General Manager. He then retired and enjoyed playing tennis for the next 17 years. He was an avid Saints fan from the first game they played.

Being very civic minded, he served as a member of many organizations, including Secretary of the Jeanerette Lion Club: Co-Director of the Jeanerette Civilian Defense Unit; Captain of the Jeanerette Auxiliary Police Department: Iberia Parish Deputy Sheriff: Life member and Firearms instructor of the National Rifle Association; Assistant Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America; Board Member of the White Gold sugar refinery; American Sugar Cane League; Western Louisiana Sugar Producers Association; American Red Cross First Aid Instructor; Life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars; and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his son, Steven J. Bergeron and wife, Kathy, of Northport, Alabama; daughters Vanessa B. LaFont and husband, Rodney, of Jeanerette; Laura B. Domangue and husband, Tommy, of Tomball, Texas; and Rachel B. Hope and husband, Josef, of Broussard, LA. Also, granddaughters Aimee B. Van Dahl of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Antoinette (Toni) B. Battles and husband William “Bo” of Duncanville, Alabama; grandsons Jared P. Dorsey and wife Ashley of Carencro, LA; Christopher J. Bergeron and wife Lisa of Raleigh, N.C.; Nicholas Tharp of Youngsville, LA; and Colin Tharp of New Iberia, LA. Great grandsons Adam Bergeron of Baton Rouge, LA; Dylan VanDahl of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Austin T. Bergeron of Northport, Alabama; Gabriel Battles of Duncanville, Alabama; Abel Irvin Bergeron of Raleigh, N.C.; Great-granddaughters Madeline Bergeron of Raleigh, N.C.; Linden B. Dorsey of Carencro, LA; and Laila G. Battles of Duncanville, Alabama. Also several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Also, a sister Sylvia B. Picheloup of New Iberia, LA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Kern Bergeron, after 56 years of marriage; father James J. Bergeron, Sr.; mother, Lillian Eve Evans Bergeron; brothers, James J. Bergeron, Jr., Howard P. Bergeron, and Thomas Evans Bergeron; sister, May Dee Bergeron Billiot; father in-law, Sidney “Red” Kern; and mother in-law, Gertrude Alleman Kern.
Pallbearers will be: Steven Bergeron, Rodney LaFont, Tommy Domangue, Josef Hope, Jared Dorsey, and Nick Tharp.
In lieu of flowers, it was his request that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929, or, to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St., Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503.
