She worked for a short time in New Iberia before beginning her 19 year career at Franklin Foundation Hospital. She then moved to Lafayette General Hospital where she worked for 20 years, and at the time of her retirement she was the Chief Nurse Anesthetist. Susan and her husband, Wayne, were also owners of Landry’s Funeral Home of Jeanerette.

When Susan started nursing school she found four of her life long friends. They referred to themselves as the “Mercy Girls”-Gloria Beach, Toni Stack, Marie Jacob and Evelyn Schouest. With the addition of Hertha Barrilleaux, a fellow Nurse Anesthetist, their love of nursing and each other formed a bond that could never be broken.
Susan was an amazing mother and grandmother to her own, as well as to friends of her children and grandchildren. She passed on many life lessons. One grandchild wrote “You knew what was expected of you and what her standards were. She never stopped loving you, her words motivated you to believe in yourself, the way she did.”
Susan enjoyed traveling to visit her son, Stephen who serves as a Colonel in the United States Air Force, and his family at all of the different military bases he was stationed at around the world. She enjoyed her unique tennis group (OAY), gardening, sewing, and decorating for the holidays. She loved watching her grandchildren play any and all sports. In all that life gave her, she enjoyed most of all spending time with her sons, their wives, and her grandchildren.
